My son enlisted in the army yesterday and will do his basic training at Fort Sill in Oklahoma starting on January 7th.

That sounds like it’s gonna be cold as shite and miserable. After that he’s got combat medic school in San Antonio.

Anybody ever had basic at fort sill in winter?

TIA

Fort Sill isn't too bad, but I mean basic training is still basic training.

Tell him the first thing he wants to do is to find the meanest looking drill instructor and call him sir.

Basic training today is different than it was in the 80's. You now get time outs and weird shite. The drill sgts can't beat you like they used to. But they will still do unimaginable things to your boy. And he will return a better man for it. Pass along my support for your son and thank him for continuing the long tradition of dedicated soldiers. Hoorah

And yes it will be cold as a well diggers arse. And he will survive.

It is easy once you accept the fact that you will never do anything right and you get to do free exercise. Don't be a bitch and run. That's pretty much basically training.

That being said, all my friends who went for Ft Chill had it much easier than I did at Lost in the Woods........

...and my shite was easy.

(I am saying all of this and I am no PT god by any means.)

It’s the army man, he’d have a tougher time at Girl Scout summer camp. I wouldn’t sweat it.

A lot of things has changed since I did basic back in the 80’s. Basic isn’t that bad, just keep your mouth shut and do what they tell you to do.

It will be cold for sure.

San Antonio is nice and has lots to do. It is rather expensive imo though.

There is everything from the oldest gun club, powerpark fitness course (American Ninja Warrior), top golf and tons of other things he can do.

Nope. Completed mine at MCRD San Diego (USMC), but had to get treatment at San Antonio Military Medical Center, so a bit familiar with the area.

He will be fine in basic, the thing that you need to tell your son is to stay out of trouble. One boo boo now a days will get you kicked out.

Best of luck to your youngin!

That OK wind will cut right through for sure. Ever noticed those little hardwood trees along the fence lines driving through OK? They all grow toward one direction, the branches pushed by the wind so they actually lean the trees to all one direction.

I had a company commander (navy boot camp) rip my t-shirt right off my body for failing an inspection. He got in trouble for it. I got called in by higher ups about what happened and I just said i deserved it for not being prepared for the inspection. He was still our CC after that and I got less shite from him after that so

No, I was at Benning in the Winter. If Benning was miserable weather wise, I am positive Sill will meet all expectations

Oklahoma has some of the worst all around weather in the country. I've been in -15 and 115 degree weather all in the same spot. Jan is gonna be rough.

Oh, and tell him to use his stress card as much as possible. His DS will have mad respect for that.

Solid advice. Along with this he needs to tell the drill sgt. his full name and then say “make sure you remember who I am”. This will ensure he gains the drill’s respect and admiration.
