I would’ve chose Ft. Sill over Ft. McClellan any day of the week and twice on Sunday if I had the choice, because it was hot and humid as frick at McClellan during the summer and back in the 80’s we didn’t have A/C in the barracks, just large fans to circulate humid, sticky arse air. That was the roughest thing I had to deal with in basic.

Charles Thompson, the OU QB that got arrested for dealing coke, is from that area. Tell him to stay out of Lawton, OK. It belongs to Satan!
quote:Lawton, OK Wiki
Lawton has one of the highest crime rates in not only Oklahoma, but the rest of the U.S. Violent crimes and property crimes are the most prevalent, with the respective probabilities of being a victim of these crimes being 1 in 102 and 1 in 22. The overall crime rate is Lawton is 56 per 1000 residents.

basic training
Most stress free nine weeks I've had since I was a kid.
Didn't have to think, make decisions, anything. Just did what I was told.

I’m not 100% sure they still train combat MOS at Knox anymore. A few years back they moved the US Army Armor School from Knox to Benning. As an old tanker, it still chaps my arse they did this. It’s blasphemy
Wow....that is blasphemy!!! Ole misery, agony and heartbreak hill are absolute killers.

MY head DI's favorite remedial exercise was to fill sandbags , and Ft Dix had a lot of fricking sand. You'd be out there for hours filling sand bags and the next morning you'd jog by and another class would be out emptying those same sand bags.
And by remedial, I mean that motherfricker was a mean sumbbitch, he'd come in the barracks and if one single bed wasn't made up to the exacting standards he'd dump them all over.
One day we came back after a long day of training to find that everyone in our whole platoon was missing their second pair of boots. One person had left a pair of laces untucked, so this sumbitch gathered up every pair of boots tied all the laces together in a big knot and threw them out into the alley behind the barracks.
We had several tough instructors in my company, but this guy was just a dick.
Years later after I had went to college and OCS I was a Captain and go reassigned to Ft Dix, one day I'm at the gate and this motherfricker came rolling up, I recognized him, he didn't recognize me. The Corporal running the gate come back and tells me that this dickhead doesn't have his ID should he let him on base anyway? I went out there and dressed his arse down for not doing things by the book and then reminded him who I was and told him to have a nice day.

Fort Sill is a shite hole, but there is a fantastic strip club in Lawton that we used to visit from time to time from Norman while I was in college.

Cold, windy, and a lot of walking. Not bad

[quote]I did Phase 3 of ILE up there a few years ago and its like a Ghost town, row after row of empty barracks. The Air Force side is hopping though.[/quote
Truly been underutilized over the last 15-20 years, but that shite hole was no joke when it came to summer time training. We did several 10 mile marches in 100 + degree weather all sand. Brutal.

Top visited our barracks one day out of the blue and found a half opened bucket of floor wax in the hallway closet which triggered him to pour out 10 gallons of liquid wax all over our barracks. We never used any of the army issued wax back in those days, we used Johnsons paste wax by heating it up and applying it to the floor, so its no telling how long that bucket was sitting in there half opened. Took us forever to strip that shite up.

He’ll do fine. When the drill sergeants yells at him he can pull out his stress card and spend 30 minutes in his safe space.
