Ever noticed those little hardwood trees along the fence lines driving through OK? They all grow toward one direction, the branches pushed by the wind so they actually lean the trees to all one direction.

NOPE!
They all lean towards the east because Arkansas SUCKS!

he will be fine. Basic is pretty simple if you come to the realization sooner rather than later that they can't hit you and the worst they can do is smoke you for hours. Everything is mental. Sure there will be times when it is physically overwhelming, but once you realize its the worst they can do and you try and enjoy it, it can become fun.

The hardest part is realizing the rest of the world turns while you are there. The world doesnt stop and that plays mental game on you.

as far as training, it will be traditional basic. Tell him to try and enjoy the weapons training.

Fort Sill isnt bad from what i have heard and not nearly as hard as Benning or even knox.

Cold and Windy, probably better than the 100 plus heat we were in back in 93. Tarantulas will not be around in the field for him at least. Congrats to him and good luck

for the first 3 months. Then it will be hot as shite and miserable. The bright side is in the middle they may get a break from training because of a tornado.

The only thing between Oklahoma and Canada is a fence somewhere in Nebraska...and half the time the fence is blown over

It is easy once you accept the fact that you will never do anything right and you get to do free exercise. Don't be a bitch and run. That's pretty much basically training.

That being said, all my friends who went for Ft Chill had it much easier than I did at Lost in the Woods........

...and my shite was easy.

(I am saying all of this and I am no PT god by any means.)

Pretty much this. If he's in reasonable shape it won't be very difficult as long as he can take getting yelled at. I saw big arse dudes break down crying when someone was up in their face screaming. Keep your head down but don't be a ghost because if no one (or everyone) knows who you are they'll frick with you.

it is always been surprising to me at how mentally weak some people are, and that they can't break the code that all of that is a mental exercise, I remember a guy in survival training was caught early on, the "captors" had him over the loud speakers admitting to war crimes and telling everyone else to turn themselves in because of the good chow and good treatment, dude hadn't been out in the bush long enough to get a five o'clock shadow

Eh, not really... eastern OK is just a continuation of what you'd find in Arkansas. Down around Ft Sill there is what you might call "mountains" but they are quite small really.

Note: I live in OKC, which is central OK and there is nothing resembling a hill for miles and miles in any direction.

As far as the weather, yeah it will be cold in January, but it won't be that bad. You're about as far south in OK as you can be.

Summer camp. No worse than football practice.

And AIT will be like college. Except with PT in the morning.

Stress cards LOL what a bunch of pussies. In my day a DI could and would knock a private's dick in the dirt and nothing said.

I was one of the last classes to go through Fort Dix in the summer It was so hot there a lot of days that even back in 1988 they weren't allowed to use exercise as punishment, well not outdoors anyway.

People for sure were given code reds and such back in my day.

I remember seeing a Drill cold cock a pvt. in formation one day because his cover was not squared away. Hit him square in the jaw and the dude went down like a sack of potatoes.

Yah. The old “wet bulb” thermometer. I did OSUT at Ft. Knox the summer of 88. One Sunday they had the guys who couldn’t pass their PT tests out doing remedial PT. I was on KP that day and remember seeing them run past while we were out behind the mess hall sneaking cigarettes the little Korean ladies who worked in the Chow Hall had given us. This one kid was lagging behind the rest of the PT guys. Really seemed to be sucking wind. Little bit later we heard the ambulance coming. Turns out that after he got to the top of the hill and around the corner of the block, he collapsed and died. And to make matters worse, the wet bulb was in the red that day. We lost a couple of Drill Sgts. over that frick up.

Just going to be honest...Fort Silly isn’t going to be too bad at all. The toughest Army basic training posts are at Fort Benning and Fort Knox. Those are both still very tough because they train combat MOS soldiers. Fort Relaxin Jackson, SC....Fort Lost in the Woods, MO and Fort Silly, OK are where most of your non combat MOS soldiers go. He will be fine.

GO ARMY...beat navy!!

I’m not 100% sure they still train combat MOS at Knox anymore. A few years back they moved the US Army Armor School from Knox to Benning. As an old tanker, it still chaps my arse they did this. It’s blasphemy.

As for Sill, unless things have changed, they should still be training field artilley soldiers there. If so, then Sill does train combat arms soldiers.
