At one time hospitals sent itemized bills, now you only get one if you ask for it.
Everyone I ever saw for family members and friends was padded with all kinds of bullshite, like charged for 10 sleeping pills and only had 1 night in hospital. As many times as I saw it,it had to be on purpose.

I imagine that still goes on.

Wait until you find out who pays for Medicare and Medicade(spoiler alert: it's you and me and anyone that pays taxes)

So again - are we letting grandma or your 2 year old rot in the gutter because of a broken leg if they can't pay??

The better answer is that we should have Medicare for All that everyone pays in to. You do realize that we're already paying to cover the old, the disabled, the young with poor parents, and the poor(in the form of Medicare/Medicade)

The only people not getting the benefit of Medicade and Medicare are the people actually paying for it

What isn't talked about is the lack of transparency and bait and switch billing tactics some hospitals employ.

They like to tack on extras after you prepay, after your stay and then months later you get a surprise bill.

Pre-Obamacare, our family policy through BC/BS cost us $400/ month through our small business. Post-Obamacare, that same policy was $2000/month. Forced me to get a corporate job with benefits.

i posted in this thread on P1 that i asked for an itemized bill and wasn't given one.

because they didn't file paperwork and then made up numbers after the fact.

on the one hand..yea pay your debts....on the other frick the medical system right now.

We have really good health insurance and I was still floored how much it cost to have a kid in the hospital. We paid thousands in advance for what I thought was the brunt of it only to get smacked with about 6 grand in additional bills for the stay, the food and every little thing. The thing that I'm sure get's most people is hospital staff have to make quick decisions with vital implications...but all that costs extra. My wifes BP TANKED and they started putting this and that into her IV...it all cost a fortune but what was I gonna do decline it? ask how much it was gonna cost as she was bottoming out?

It was a ton to be hit with and annoying but at the end of the day we could pay it without much disruption...I can't imagine other families being hit with it who aren't as comfortable as we are.

I don’t think medical can report. It’s a violation of HIPAA. He can fight that with the credit bureau if he researches how to go so.

Better? That's a valid question. I think of it like this - will there be less doctors or hospitals than we have today? Probably not....but possibly over time. Will some doctors move to a cash payment method? Probably...but the the costs will be real instead of crazy inflated for this game of charades we play with insurance companies. Even your GP inflates the costs that are submitted to your commercial insurance today.

Will it be cheaper? I think taking medical bankruptcy off the table for everyone is a good thing. Even if you do declare bankruptcy because you got cancer and it killed your entire savings account - those costs end up getting passed on to everyone else. So again, we're back to the costs are already being shared by everyone. The only difference is, we've put this MASSIVE for-profit commercial entity(insurance) between the patient and the medical provider today.

You know what's bullshite? Deductibles. You know what else is bullshite? Prior authorizations for medications. Either you need it or you don't.

Go to an ER and watch all the people checking in with sniffles who don’t pay a dime or call 911 and get an ambulance ride for toe pain and you and I pay for it.

I have been out of the business for a very long time, but yes, there was some kind of medical collection on just about every credit report I pulled for mortgage refis. At the time, underwriting wouldn't hold that against them on the DTI. A judgement, however, which is when a collector sues you and wins, and then reports that judgement, that absolutely gets held against you, because with a judgement the collector can actually put liens on your property , house, car, boat, anything with a title.

The guy above that got served papers and didn't show up would have a default judgement against him for not showing up or otherwise contacting the clerk for other arrangments. Whether or not that collector ever actually reported that judgement to the credit reporting agencies is another matter. But when you get served by the sheriff with a suit, one should not simply throw them in the trash. As I said before, judgements follow you forever, they don't get forgiven or drop off your credit report after X years.

It's probably how they get around the agreed rate for different medical services.

Similar to LSU tuition and TOPS. TOPS covers tuition, so LSU tosses in various fees to supplement costs that TOPS doesn't cover.

So de facto free healthcare the cost of which is passed on to the insureds and self-pays. That the American way!!!

Every other civilized country in the world: "What's medical debt?". We need universal healthcare and we need it now.

I do not. That not what it costs, that’s what they charge.

If you want to risk dying while waiting in line should you have serious medical condition, that's the ticket.

Canadians who are healthy are happy with their socialized medicine. Canadians who have serious medical issues like to quip, "My dogs and cats get better care." Rationing by bean counters has that effect.

My sister was an ER nurse for years. She had lots of those kind of stories. There are some crappy people on this world.
