Arkansas cop who felt threatened by protestors accidently shoots/kills colleague

Calvin Nicholas “Nick” Salyers, 33, of Alexander, is charged with manslaughter in the June 3 slaying of 36-year-old Scott Hutton, who was shot through Salyers’ front door.

Salyers, who has been an Alexander police officer since 2017, made the statement in late May or early June, when protests over the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officers began to get violent.
Salyers is accused of making the comments to Alexander police training officer Sgt. Matt Wharton, according to Special Agent Ryan Jacks with the Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division. It is unclear why Salyers thought protesters might show up at his home.
“Sgt. Wharton told me that he instructed Officer Salyers that he could not do that because it was reckless and negligent,” Jacks wrote in the arrest affidavit. “Wharton stated that they could not shoot anyone without identifying them first and identify(ing) that there was a threat.”

The guy that got killed was probably fricking with him to make him think the rioters were coming to get him.

Here's another issue with your title: he didn't accidentally shoot him.
He shot him on purpose. Maybe he didn't intend for the other cop to be the target, but it wasn't an accident.

As long as he sticks to “I felt my life was threatened“, he will be fine. It’s the magic mantra for cops. It’s never worked for a gang member, much less a regular Joe

Is a jury going to find someone knocking on his door gives him a reasonable fear for his life?
I am curious how this will play out in future cases when police knock on suspects' doors and there's an occupant inside.

Thinking that might be what happened is not making an excuse for it. Not for me anyway. Because there is no excuse for what he did. He was reckless and in the wrong and should absolutely do time for it. But it doesn't mean that his colleague wasn't trying to play a joke on him.

Probably, but it also sounds like there was a chance that this officer was mentally ill. I haven’t heard of any protestors showing up to a police officer’s house to protest, so I gotta think there were some paranoia issues at play here if this guy is preemptively making that kind of plan for such an unlikely event. And then a single guy shows up at this house and he pulls the trigger? IDK, seems like even if the other cop was hollering and banging outside, a cop with their head on straight would be extremely unlikely to blindly fire through a closed door at a single assailant. So my guess is this guy had something wrong with him.
