OP, others have beat you down enough for considering the Northshore and I generally agree. If you could find a nice little house or something to rent in Old Mandeville by the lake, it wouldn't be all that bad. Yes the commute will stink though.
There are several little bars and restaurants in that area
The old Gretna or Algiers Point suggestions are something to think about.

Until you’re married and wanting to have children, there is no reason to not live in New Orleans proper. Dating, night life, dining, etc will all be vastly superior in town. If the issue is price, then I’d recommend Bucktown, Bonnabel Place, Jefferson, or Elmwood in East Jeff.

And to the OP - The north shore is really not that bad for a young couple, but I’m just not sure why you wouldn’t want to be on the south shore if you have a social life and especially if you drink at social events.
Commute is not that bad but you will be isolated from friends in the city and would need to make Friends over here.
I would say rent a place in old Metairie if you really don’t want to be in the city.

Old Metairie is the best place to live on the southshore that is not in New Orleans proper. PERIOD.
Problem is, rentals for a new college graduate and girlfriend are going to be pricey. You can rent a whole house, but I doubt you could afford it. Very few apartments in Old Metairie. There are some areas in Old Metairie still specifically zoned for doubles or townhouses. There is essentially no zonig for aprtment complexes in Old Metairie (and I would avoid apartment complexes in the rest of Metairie like the plague).
Here is a zoning map of most of Metairie. Yellow (R-1) is single family homes, orange is R-2 (doubles/townhouses alllowed). Brown is multi-family. I've outlined some areas of interest that are pretty cool:
The one area I've outlined that is pretty much yellow around Metairie Court/Metairie Heights was recently re-zoned to all R-1, but there are a lot of doubles/townhomes there that were grandfathered in. There also some other non- Old Metairie areas that are zoned for doubles to consider: Old Jefferson just east of Central Avenue, and the area north of Airline between Severn and Cleary.

Hey now, I've enjoyed cutting the grass since my dad started me doing it when I was around 10. But yea, that commute would have been no fun in my "party" years.
