Areas to live outside of New Orleans Proper.

Hey guys, I graduate in December and will probably end up working in New Orleans. I have lived in the Lower Garden District before, and my parents live there now.
I really would like to be outside of New Orleans. Any recommendations on where I should be looking? I'm not looking to buy, and will probably be having my girlfriend move in with me.

Mandeville is for when you get married and have a family, NOT when you just graduate

Don't move across the lake until you're married and ready to have a family. If you're JUST graduating, find a hip spot in downtown NOLA and live there for awhile... find a girl, get married, and then buy across the lake.

I don't litter and I don't vote for Democrats, but when I lived in Mandeville I did both of those things. Some people don't deserve nice things.

You don't want to be over here young and unmarried. Rent in Old Metairie if you don't want to be in NOLA proper. My wife and I lived there for 4 years before moving across the lake.

I just don't know if I want to actually live in New Orleans. Been there done that.

My parents lived in Mandeville for 20 or so years and loved it. They lived in Fountainbleau, nice subdivision. My mom's boss lived in Beau Chen, also very nice. Beau Chen also has some apartments you can buy/rent that are on the Tchefuncte. All this may be out of the price range for a recent graduate though.

You can check out Chenier.
It'd be good to start with a list of priorities and work from there (Proximity to lake, Trace, etc...). You'll probably want quick access to the Causeway if you're hiking across the lake. There are a few apartment complexes in Old Mandeville but I don't know anything about those.
