Feeling existential? I think we have deep rooted values/beliefs that were instilled in us by our parents and society at a young age. But we are capable of evolving. I think the answer is a combination of inherited beliefs and independently formed or modified beliefs.

I believe that the OP is a piece of shite, Im rewarded to see that others have started following that belief but making it their own, and taking responsibility for their actions unlike the OP
I credit my father to teaching me to stand on what I believe and to lead others to the truth but allow them to take responsibility and credit for it because even if I lead by example they took those steps on their own, like a man
thats why I admire 08 and others who have honored their bets on here

To answer your question from someone with some years on them. Young person just what parents said. Went off to college and it was my own. However as I got older and had children I realized my views and beliefs were more in line with my parents.
Now here is the deal and I don’t know how old you are but my dad has been dead for thirty years and he gets smarter everyday. Everyday even at 58 I say dang that old man was right all along.
Yes, I think teenagers and even the younger college kids, for the most part, repeat what they have heard or was taught.. But as you get older and experience your own life, your views change. Some people are stuck when it comes to their views.
I don't have the same views today that I had 10 years ago and I am sure 10 years from now my views will evolve from where they are today. But sometimes I think back to views I used to have and I question why I had those views and why or when my views on particular issues changed. And I realize some views I had were based on the people I was around or what I thought was the "norm" to believe.

I don't consider myself atheist (which you spelled wrong).. I believe in a higher power, but I don't follow a religion. But why is someone a "sheep" if they are atheist?

Belief is a little of both.
Values come from books I read as a child.

Obviously, as we grow up we are taught and pick up on the beliefs and values our parents and people around us have.. Has yours evolved into your own values and beliefs or do you still hold the ones you were taught. And learned?
My parents think because I am a non-practicing Catholic that I have thrown away all values they taught me. Not the case. I still believe in hard work, kindness and treating people decent. They haven't spoken to me in over 6 months. They went 2 years in my SO-JR years in college. Small-minded and angry.

So you currently have no relationship with them?

None, they won't talk to me. I have tried.

Wow. No offense, I know that is your parents an all, but I would imagine, as a parent, there is no way to expect your kids to have the same exact beliefs as you do..

I was taught to be a right wing, meat eating Christian who thinks for himself. The latter didn't jive with 2 of the first 3 though.

structured values that are communicated through the organization allow for greater achievement as folks transfer work more seamlessly.
unstructured values that change with current affairs leads to confusion and prohibits progress. anarchy follows.
used to be the major parties put significant effort at conventions at developing platforms with plank specifying what the party believed in and worked on. the result was supported by the entire party. no longer do parties write down what they believe in.
diversity in an unstructured organization leads to madness
hamarribi, Ten Commandments, koran, torah, buddests, are examples of early value systems
mao, Stalin, Laos, Hugh heffner, had value systems that were destructive.
except for religious based value based systems, I could not identify a non sectarian well defined value system in use today

You can say the same for an organization that isn't diverse.
