I am right in the path. Schools are off that day and I have been given the day off as well. Day drinking and eclipse it is for me. May even take the glasses off and stare right at the mother fricker.

While I worked in Houston, Houston had a 60% eclipse. It did get noticably darker. Outside the office was a tree that always gave dappled shade.
With the eclipse, every spot (in normal light) became a sun with part of it dark. Thousands of crescent suns. That was as neat a view as doing the box with a pinhole in it.
If I were traveling, I'd go to the midwest, and watch the weather for openings in the clouds. East coast is going to have clouds .....somewhere. Guarantee it.

Going to Nashville for this. Booked rooms 6 months ago. Most of the area hotels have been out of rooms for a while and the few that are left are $$$. You can stay an hour or so away for pretty cheap.
Totality only last for 2 min 40 sec but it should be worth it.

o the poster who mentioned Hopkinsville, Kentucky as a prime viewing place, you're right. They will have the longest duration of totality in the US, about 2 minutes and 40 seconds.

Gonna watch it from my driveway.

It'll still be quite a sight even for those not in the path of totality. It's at a great time of the day for anyone who can get off work.
We are going to have a party. Hopefully the weather is good!

If you are in the Southeast, look at Nashville, Greenville SC, Columbia SC, and Charleston. All will have 100% totality.
These will be the easiest and most accessible places to get to. Columbia's hotels are ALL booked up.
However, it is in August, so just hope that afternoon t-storms aren't around.

Actually, I would not recommend Charleston if traveling to South Carolina.
Greenville and Columbia are much better choices.

I was thinking about getting an Air B-n-B beach house near Charleston for it, but read too many stories of people having their reservations cancelled by gouging hosts and didn't want to take a chance on not having a place to stay.

There are a couple reasons why I wouldn't pick Charleston. It is August, so it will already be freaky busy because of tourist season. Also, downtown Charleston is far enough from the center line of the eclipse that you'll be sacrificing 30 seconds or more of eclipse totality. Looking at the map, the center line goes right through the national forest north of the city.
With Columbia and Greenville, the center line goes through areas with parks, stadiums, college campuses, etc...plus you don't have the hassle of tourist season. These two cities will be plenty packed, but at least you'll have plenty of accessible places to view.

*raises hand*
Took a week off, headed to a small town on the the Missouri/Illinois border. Hope the weather cooporates and then I'm off to spend the rest of the week in Chicago, where I had never been.

We live in Hilton Head and you can still find things on VRBO available. I didn't look at areas closer to Charleston, but it's less than 2 hrs.

I would if it wasn't on a Monday. So I'll just see what I can see from home. Which means, given my history of cosmic events, it will be completely overcast.

The one that crossed Baton Rouge in May, 1984, was awesome.

I'm travelling to be out of the path of that asteroid strike being marketed as a solar eclipse.
