I have never had damage more than power outage and a tree down so I can't say how I would feel if my house got flooded or damaged severely. We did get a roof leak one storm from a cap or something blowing off the roof that did a couple grand in damage but it was WAY less than the storm deductible they were going by and it wasn't enough money to bother to try to fight a claim and we had a roof guy fix the actual leak on the spot when he inspected it with stuff out of his truck for a couple hundred doll hairs.

We read the poli board out loud sometimes to remind why we don’t live in the Deep South.
There are many parts of this country that aren't swarming with perpetually angry imbeciles
This is a tough balance, because we love LSU. We don’t love what we consider ignorant.

Left May 2019, and will never go back. Best decision ever.

I was but our parents are getting old and getting a home with on a large lot of land that is still in a neighborhood seems really ridiculously expensive in other cities/decent areas.
If I were the type of person that liked homes that are kind of on top of each other, have front-facing garages, with no trees, I would move in a heartbeat. You can get that and be in much better areas in Houston, SA, Austin, Charlotte, Phoenix, NWA, etc.
I mean, people are paying $250k for DR Horton style homes in the BR area.

The thing we noticed as a family is once you leave LA you notice how much frustration and agitation is a part of your daily life there. This environment brings on a cynicism in you that can be tough to get rid of. We moved to the houston burbs and it has its ups and downs but we do visit LA regularly
Every time I go back I am reminded why it was a good decision to leave. Careers, education, QOL, environment all improved dramatically once we put down roots here
Both of my kids had damn strong offers to go to LSU, both declined and are at UTexas. My son put it best, for him going to LSU felt like going backwards in life. That stings but I understand where he is coming from. We watch LSU together on TV, he doesn’t give a shite about the Longhorns
My wife makes 2.5x what she Made in LA. Both of my kids have very bright futures and opportunities we couldn’t dream of if we stayed in Lafayette. It sucks, but it is our reality.

Seriously mulling this over right now.
My kids are in college, both living away.
Sick of paying to live in a state that offers very little opportunity.
Jobs, infrastructure, politics, hurricanes, ignorance and stupidity,
I'm fed up with it.
I'm over it. If I could convince my parents, I would do it in a minute.
Thinking of the Hot Springs, Arkansas area. Lake living.

Personally, if I ever get fired, I'm outta here. My job is too good to leave though at the moment but deep down, I wish someone would push me out the door of Louisiana and force my hand

I moved away fifteen years ago.
I miss my family, the people (best in the world), and food greatly.
However, there just aren’t the career opportunities for me in Louisiana that I have found elsewhere.
My biggest personal goal was to work as hard while away and be able to retire a bit younger (or be in a position to take a job making less with having banked some significant savings) and one day move back. I will get there hopefully sooner than later.
My heart does go out to everyone impacted by the storms this season. From the folks in Southwest Louisiana that got the worst of it and everyone else throughout the southern part of the state for the additional unneeded stress (on-top of everything with Covid).

Left for 7 years before I had kids, came back for family to let my kids get to know my mom before she died of cancer.... wife’s parents and my dad/sister still here so I think we’re stuck in LA now but I’d be happy to leave again. FYI, in DC/Virginia had earthquake, hurricanes, blizzards too that mess with your life... you can’t escape natural disasters.... but you can escape heat/lack of 4 seasons/mosquitoes. Political corruption is everywhere. You do miss food and family/people in Louisiana most being away and LSU football if you’re into that but if I could move to foothills of Colorado tomorrow on a few acres I would.
Fortunately or unfortunately, We can make good/same money here as well as anywhere else in medical field and cost of living is lower. Can afford kids private school though I’d rather not have to. but I’d even settle for Ozarks than here... just cooler weather and less dumbassery

Call an insurance broker if still in Louisiana... my Hurricane deductible is flat 1000$, just got a 19k check from Laura unfortunately and then had to use again for a lightning strike that fried our electronics and some breakers. Don’t ever accept insurance with a percentage deductible

People will lean on all the talk about food & family being here so they stay. Guess what? There's loads of healthier food, and family for that matter, in 47 other states (take out MS & AL for the obvious reasons). Your niece or nephew won't car or remember who was at their 5th birthday party or their 18th. Send a card, send a text, or video call & be done with it.

wow just saw this thread this morning
414,171 households on food stamps (out of about 1.6M households in the state)
1.5 million people on Medicaid (out of about 4.7M people in the state)
how is this sustainable?
reminds me of idiocracy

XOM HAS dramatically changed their employment numbers, but moreso than that, the cuts in contractors and third party service providers are likely to persist. The company as a whole is in VERY bad shape, and the chances of any future expansions are stymied by idiot local politicians, exacerbated by a Governor that clearly does not care if he causes economic ruin or not. Louisiana had a very good shot at an $8 Billion grassroots petrochemical complex, but DumBel basically told XOM senior management he didn’t care if it came here or not, “take it to Texas for all I care”, so off to Corpus went the project and the many thousands of jobs it’s created. And now we sit, locked up tight, as our King comes on TV daily to scold us, while he continues to falsify data to grab more Federal dollars for he and his GumboPac overlords to spend on frivolous shite.
I lived in Houston, both my kids were born there, moved back 20+ years ago to be closer to family. Lived on the Northshore for 5 years initially, not a big dropoff from Texas, back to Baton Rouge for work, and my hometown has become a cesspool. Small enclaves of safe havens surrounded by ever growing shitty areas, apartments and subdivisions being thrown up in floodplains, driven by developers paying off MetroCouncil, no one paying attention to drainage, roads that are dogshit, historic murder rate, even while everyone is locked up, city “leaders” and officials chosen solely on race....
My elderly parents will never leave, but I surely wish my boys would. I do not see any drivers to things getting better. We sorely needed Governor Vitter, he DGAF what people thought of him, and I think he would have effected some changes the state desperately needs.
to;dr Louisiana, for all its potential, is increasingly becoming a shithole, with no signs of an upturn

This is especially true. We left in 2017 and have been back 3 times to visit, and every time we go back we can feel the change in our energy. Maybe it's a personal thing, maybe it's placebo, but after we adjusted to our new environment, we are better people here than we were there.
Every place has its pros and cons, but the cons are so stark in Louisiana. Shitty infrastructure, worrying about neighborhoods you shouldn't drive into, crime, poor education, ignorant people. Obviously I am generalizing, and I really admire those who stay put and manage to have what seems to be a solid life around them, but I can only take so much.
Many people said we were running away from our problems and that they wouldn't change because we were in a place. And they were right, none of our problems changed. But we were in a place where we were able to make better decisions without feeling like the people around us thought we were trying to be better than them. And gradually we were able to tackle our problems in a manner that we decided was best, with no input from people who had drank the last 35 years of their life away.
There is a strange cynicism in Louisiana. I don't know what it is, but it drags you down and beats you with a stick until you're depressed and anxious. Or perhaps that was my unique experience. Whatever it was, I am glad to be out of there, and it would take something very significant happening for me to every consider moving back.

Wife and I are planning on bailing out ASAP. In our line of work we could both get jobs anywhere. Make the same money and be able to afford the home we deserve on acreage, preferably somewhere that has some topography worth looking at and a climate that doesn't suck. Real estate prices in the southern part of this damn state are fricking ridiculous. I also am worried for my kids. Zero real opportunities here for them. La is doomed.
