Damn son, come to Texas. We’ll find you a hot cowgirl that’ll ride you like a bucking bronc at the Houston rodeo.

I dont want to bitch. I want to change a situation. And when you are surrounded by those who think its a waste of time and/or the way of life, it gives off a very defeatist vibe that manifests into insecurity.

Try to eat healthier? Get called a pussy.

Trying not to drink? It wont kill you. Peer pressure.

Want to start a small business that isnt a trade/labor? Who do you think you are? Nobody is going to pay for that.

Ride a bike instead of drive a vehicle? Grow up, get on the sidewalk, join society, etc.

Its a state filled with people who are mostly obese, out of shape, ignorant, and miserable who get upset and insecure when other people try to change their way of life.

This is sad but also true. This state & the majority of the people here are stuck in there ways.

There's nothing wrong with holding on to timeless traditions. That's what makes the culture here special but at the same time, that mentality also limits growth in other areas of life.

You have to be able to adapt to the changes of the times or stay the same & die off/become extinct. This state's mentality & outlook on so many issues has it on the endangered species list.

Again I am generalizing. But these were my experiences for 25 years.

Your experiences are mostly the same as those who strive to make a better life for themselves & their children. You may feel like what you posted in a generalization of your own personal experiences but it's honestly a factual assessment of many others with similar situations.

Is there a more self-deprecating state than Louisiana? There is one of these threads monthly about how people hate it there and are encouraging people to leave. I find this strange.

I honestly believe it's due to the downturn in oil & gas over the past few years. For a long time this industry has allowed people to provide a pretty stable life for their families especially in south Louisiana. A guy fresh out of high school come make decent money with an opportunity of advancement if he had a strong work ethic & was willing to learn. Those opportunities have shrunken greatly.

The downturn has caused a loss of jobs & for the remaining jobs that are still available, the pay rates aren't what they used to be. Both oil companies & the third party service providers have been in penny pinching mode for years now. Along with the cut in pay rates, oil companies don't just give hours away on a time ticket like they used to do.

Do I have to stay in Houston after the rodeo?

Got 3.5 more years before my bar license will have reciprocity in Texas and Tennessee.

Probably the biggest barrier to me moving out of state is the need to take a common law bar exam in order to do so. Bar exams are only offered twice a year (feb and july) and are very expensive to sit for and study for both in time and in money. I have until the end of this month to decide if I want to sign up for a February bar exam somewhere. Taking the exam usually requires spending a week on site taking the exam. Right now, I’m leaning towards Colorado. Covid has totally f$&ked the job market as well, so I should just be thankful that I have the job I’ve got for now.

I would only leave if kids and parents moved as well. I sometimes think it would have been better to leave and kids be raised somewhere with better opportunities. Now they will never leave either

Like the IQ of customer service reps at places like Target and restaurants and fast food. They can’t even put a sentence together

I just feel bad for the future of Louisiana. I’ll always have a special place for it

Beautiful summation!

I could move to Texas and still have the ability to see all my clients. Once my kids are out of school I am out.

Schools are one of the best reasons to leave Louisiana.

Truth. The lack of litter on the ground was the first thing I noticed.

Louisiana will always be home and special to my family, but I will leave when I can. I have been to every state in the lower 48, and there are some wonderful places to live and raise a family. Baton Rouge, in particular, has become a litter bomb and is horribly managed for public services.
Sorry, but true!
