I wish tipping In general would just cease to exists.
Pay your own damn employees and quit making me supplement their pay.
I tip waiters, that's it, and I wish that would stop.
And I put the do not disturb sign up the second I walk in the room and take it off when I checkout.

I have, almost, always gotten exemplary service if I tip. Including extra towels, pillows, the good body wash etc.

I'm not sure of the amount or the frequency. I've often wondered what is considered standard and depending on the country.

I usually only tip housekeeping once a day and that's in the morning when we leave for brreakfast and make up the room. I've occasionally left money again or a note prior to turndown service. Sometimes that depends on the hotels and the ammenities they offer.
Sometimes room clean up and turn down service is done during different shifts and I'd hate to stiff the person on one shift. So it depends.
Like tipping a bartender taking care of housekeeping staff can have unforeseen rewards. Once got upgraded to a very expensive penthouse for the last night by a house kept putting in an appreciative word to the director of rooms. Grateful housekeeper also can be extra diligent in their service, leave extra towels, be generous with bottle water and bedtime snacks. I've found leaving a few bucks on your way out is an expected custom but tipping during the stay to have other purposes other than a show of appreciation.

I usually tip $1 each day. Maybe I'll throw in loose change on the last day - but no pennies.
Sometimes I'll leave a dollar out and they won't pick it up. In that case, I usually leave a note and tell them to give a dollar to the person who cleaned the room yesterday.

No, we have to stop this growing culture of tipping everybody to do their damn job. I go a BBQ place that has counter service and they want me to select a tip amount at the end of the transaction. What am I tipping you for?

Why not? If you have the money and they do a good job, pay whatever you feel you think is fair. Hell, you would probably make that person's day. A $20 with a nice note would probably make their week.

exactly, if I'm in some country that their currency is so worthless that it's not worth exchanging, and I know I won't be back for a while, I might leave it, not so much as a tip as I don't want to add to the stockpile of worthless foreign currency that I already have, tipping is not big outside of the US, and in some places is actually offensive to the tipee, btw

I usually don't go that far either, but I have a time or two when they go out of their way my stay a great one. Just a simple "thank you for the great service" can go a long way.
