Just a simple "thank you for the great service" can go a long way.
do you write it in Spanish?

There are some articles stating the standard is $5 a night. It's not something I ever really heard to do growing up.

Even fresh from the truck, they can understand thank you.

About a month or so ago staying at a hotel in Jackson, one of the cool housekeepers took a liking to me and invited me to a 'soul food' party in the hood by Toogaloo and introduced me to her nieces

What's your point? Does that make it any less of a nice gesture to tip someone willing to clean up after your arse?

Am I not paying to stay at the hotel? Why do I need to tip them for cleaning my room? Is cleaning my room going above and beyond? The tipping culture in the US is insane.

Does it make the gesture any less nice? I take it that you don't tip anyone? Good for you. If that makes you feel better about yourself, keep rolling that wiener wagon.
I personally prefer to tip great service and I have yet to receive bad service from any housekeeping service that I tipped. 90% of the time, they go above and beyond basic service because of it. It is a win win in my book and only cost me a few bucks. To each their own though

Only on resort/vacation stays when they do extra things. No tip at regular hotels and just making the bed and vacuuming.

Usually a dollar or two a night.
But if it's a property you know you're going to be staying at a lot in the future a generous tip will go a long way.

I usually tip at least 20% if the service is good, but I'm not tipping just to tip because it's a nice gesture. The whole purpose of the tip is to reward someone for excellent service. Now everyone comes to expect a tip regardless of the service provided.

I just see my tipping the housekeeping as an advance on great service. I am vary rarely disappointed.
