I'm A.

I was a type B before moving to BR. Constant traffic issues have beaten that particular aggressiveness out of me.

The ones which piss me off are those who pass up plenty of open space behind me just to try to squeeze in front of me.

B is correct
All lanes should be utilized until the merge point
Why waste a lane?

Maybe when traffic is moving. When right lane traffic is stopped and people cruise up in the left lane wanting to get in at the head of the line, frick that shite.
The people cruising up are in the right. Its the people trying to merge in too early that are causing things to back up and go slower.

If everyone goes all the way to the front to merge, each car in the right lane lets one person in and the zipper merge works perfectly. If some left lane drivers go all the way up front while others try to merge early, then you end up with 2-3 cars merging in front of each right lane car by the time you finally pass the bottleneck.

People randomly merging 1 mile from the actual closure makes it worse

If everybody zipper merged at the lane closure everything would go more smoothly

I’m somewhere in between. Mostly because of assholes that block the other lane trying to “keep their spot in line.” Reality is I slow my approach. There’s someone that’s going to be slower on the gas or not paying attention and I can slip in. Whether that’s farther back or right up close because of before said a-hole that doesn’t know how to do the zipper merger.

To those blocking the other lane you are lessening the surface area for the care. It’s not like there are less cars now. There’s just less surface area because you’re an a-hole.

Your nirvana of everyone leaving the left lane abandoned will never happen. Idiots slow down when It moves to one lane even if no one is merging.

Embarrass the zipper method, it’s proven via research to work. Ideally they would give it more than the last few feet, but it really is fairly harmless. What you’ll realize is that the traffic is the actual source of your frustration.

I love it when car A people think they are right and then get blasted by everyone who knows how to drive and do the zipper merge. These fricks probably stop instead of yield at roundabouts too.

It takes coordinated effort from multiple people. Damned sure can't count on that, at least not everywhere.

People in Atlanta rush hour do pretty well at it.

Car B is doing it the intended way. Google a zipper merge.

Except it’s car A utilizing it.

Zipper merging doesn’t involve being so far forward that you have to stop, and oncoming traffic needs to pause to let you in.

I’ll grant it’s people merging a mile upstream being a problem but that’s not being shown here

imagine being "smart" and thinking you're going to zipper merge and being this close to the merge point with no room to get over going 70 mph.

Zipper Merge> Your stupid scenario.

Car B has it right.

While Zipper Merging in efficient and ideal, it never works like that because B's typically speed up to that point, then slam on their breaks, disrupting the traffic speed in both lanes and causing problems.

Zipper merging works when lanes are going appropriate, near matching speeds, as soon as the differential becomes too much, then the start and stop begins, and then the whole thing falls apart.

Which is every time.

That's why the nice little image above shows 20 cars in scenario a and b and like 10 in scenario c.

Zipper Merging work sin perfectly balanced situations, or less congested scenarios, which is like never.

That's not how it works IRL. You have 40 or 50 cars who were already in the right lane when the traffic first started bottlenecking and don't have anywhere to go, 15 or 20 latecomers in the left lane, all intent on jumping the line, and one nimrod who feels compelled to let them all in ahead of him.

I say again, frick that shite.

No one in that picture is going 70mph.

Zipper merge in intended for when the traffic is being forced to slow down because of the bottleneck.

If the traffic is so light that everyone can keep on rolling at speed then it's a moot point.

B every time

You can get in early and feel better about yourself, I’m going to get where I’m going faster
