Though I do believe there is a market for a theater that charges say $5 and plays classics and cult films

Prytania Theatre in NOLA has done well cornering the classic/cult film big-screen market, while also showing mainstream releases.

You sound like the kid of guy who “rents” DVD’s from the library, Uncle Pennypincher.

Saw Showgirls at the $1 theater. Best dollar I ever spent.

I've never heard of anyone planning on going to the theater to see just half a movie.

I never did until I had a kid. First movie was some cartoon. Age appropriate to bring a 3 year old. With tickets, snacks, and drinks it was like 30 bucks for the two of us. We almost made it through the previews before he had a melt down and I had to walk out. Every movie after that was a test until we were confident he could sit through it (not that we go often at all). Only cheap shows and no treats until he was settled.

Nothing beats paying a dollar per person for a crappy 2nd run movie and paying another 30 dollars for soda, candy, and popcorn.
