Here’s a pro tip from someone that has been on both side of the desk, I don’t care what you’re selling or how well you know your customer.

Do not ever show up unannounced, or be waiting for that person in the parking lot or ambush them in the lobby. That’s the best way to lose a customer/friend.

A phone call, text or email just to let them know you’re in town or coming the next day. Always give them a heads up.

Then you have never maximized your profit.

A much younger dumber me, in a sales position, encountered a complete lay down. And after agreeing to numbers that were at least 5x the average, I learned the people I had sold to dedicated their lives to helping kids. They ran a church group where religion wasn't mentioned... Just the desire to help people.

They left happy.

And I never really tried to sell anything again.

I will destroy a car salesman to get a deal, but I'll let a little old lady talk me down on something I'm selling

Not in me anymore lol

You have to be either an OT9 or a legit sociopath to really make it in sales.

Been in sales for 6 years cold calling walking into businesses everyday unannounced. If I waited for someone to respond to an email or text I’d starve.

You’d starve if you showed up at my office unannounced or without some sort of set appointment beforehand.

who the hell sells to these types, Cutco?

I was talking about being a professional, consultative, essential partner. You bring value, you treat people fair you signs profitable deals.

My customers bought from me for over a dozen years. You don’t run around screwing em over.

You obviously dealt with a different population

There’s a difference between cold calling and actually pitching something and just showing up to shoot the shite.

If you wanna shoot the shite let’s go eat lunch or hit up happy hour

I know a guy "in sales" although i dont' know wtf he sells, somethign with technology or something. That guy gets to travel all over, play fancy golf courses, take clients to vegas, it really seems like the guy is just paid to party professionally with potential clients and get paid 6 figures for it. I can assure you he isnt' dead inside.

You either bring revenue or are an expense to your company. That brown-nosing coworker is selling himself. The skills and crafts guys are quick to sell themselves. If you clean your office before the boss visits you are selling. The problem is that you can’t do three things - get out of bed, get out of your truck, ask for the business. You choose to be a suck up.

Your question is vague. My son is in sales. He's a great guy. Sales covers a pretty wide range. What do you do? Why are you alive and reved up inside?

Been in sales for 20 years (media industry). It's very competitive but I truly believe in the product and I'm very good at it. Many of my clients have followed me because I get them results. Of course I'm always smiling & being friendly but it's not being fake or exclusive to people in sales. It's just good manners and I'm representing my employer.

People do business with those they like.

Yep. I do that. It’s a fancy sales job but I have no complaints. Life’s been good. I make a good living, and have a great family life. I’m no where near dead inside. I work for an awesome company with tremendous benefits. So you want to represent them the best You can day in and day out. I don’t travel as much as I used to, but it’s better that way. To answer the guy about showing emotion it’s not about whether you’re upset that day, or having the best day ever. It’s your job. You separate business from personal as best you can. I’ve been successful in part to making clients my friends. Not all of them of course, but the ones that we have things in common. Those friends/clients you couldn’t crack those accounts from the outside of you had a jackhammer. Treat every client whether it’s $5 or $500 million dollars as the top priority when they need you. It goes a hell of a long ways.

Edit: I don’t work on commission either. I have a nice salary, and several bonus’ opportunities each quarter in different aspects. Also the100% 401k Match is hell of a nice perk in itself. So it’s why I’m not “dead inside”

I sold for about 10 years.

Then I became the boss of the same firm.

After about a year of being the boss I realized how much I hated sales.

Every sumbitch with $0.02 owns you when you’re in Sales.

only if you’re a chump. This is the goofiest statement I’ve ever read. I’ve told clients exactly where to shove their heads without missing a beat when they get stupid.

i would say that the overlap of people who work in sales and people who have cluster b personality disorders is pretty steep

Good Lord you people are savage. Some of the best, most genuine, authentic people I’ve ever met are in sales. Thoughtful, kind, empathetic people. I guess you just know some serious DBs in sales.

You don’t think your interactions with people in sales could be different because you’re a woman?

Lots of fearful, failed salesmen in this thread. You can smell it as you read it.

Some people are natural at sales. But it is 100% able to be taught, honed to razor sharpness and utilized to great effect. Whether the person wants to learn is a huge part of it.

The cliche that everyone gets sold every day is not a cliche at all. It’s a fact.

We sell ourselves to stay in bed. We sell ourselves out not to work out, or get to work on time, or that we can’t chase our dreams. That folks think they are immune to or uninterested in negotiations are unintentionally ignorant. Negotiations occur constantly in our lives on a daily basis. You are either selling or being sold on something almost all day, every day.

If you mastered it, things would change for the positive. Even if folks just recognized a sale or negotiation as it was happening. That power of identification is so useful in and of itself.

I truly do suggest everyone try it and the service industry for at least a short while during their formative years. It helps in many ways in life in my opinion.

Depends on what they sell I would think. If they believe in what they sell then they probably aren't what you think.
