I am not going to lie but the mall I went yesterday I definitely thought it was toast the last time I went there. A lot of the stores were closing and the customers weren’t exactly there to buy stuff

In Montgomery AL, with the exceptions of Spencers and Cinnabon and JC Penney, none of the mall stores we grew up with are there anymore. Its 90 percent no--name “urban” themed stuff, food court included. No reason to go there anymore. Eastdale Mall is on track to join Montgomery Mall in the shopping graveyard. The last real name brand to open there was Chuck E Cheese, and that was ten years ago.

Lakeside is an anomaly these days. It is weirdly one of the most popular indoor malls in the country.

Stranger Things was released almost a decade ago. If malls were coming back because of that show, it would have happened already.

One of the more recent seasons was set almost entirely in a mall. That season was a few years ago.

LSU Health Shreveport is converting the old Sears at Mall St. Vincent to a cardiovascular research lab.

That was a massive dept store over there, so glad it’s going to good use

I have no idea why it thrives while so many malls have failed across the country

It's in a prime location and there aren't more indoor malls around nowadays.
The way that I see it is that in the 80's due to the high demand for malls and for their instant success, they over built malls all around the country.

Nowadays due to the boom of e-commerce, there is no need to have that many malls around. I would say depending on the size of the city, perhaps 1 or 2 malls is all you need.

Mall of La instituted a policy recently where no one under 18 after 4 on weekends without someone 21 years old or older supervising them, to help keep the hoodrat problem down.

...that was 5 years ago.

That's 1/3 of a teenagers life. They aren't starting trends based on something that, in their eyes, happened so long ago.

I'd also like the elaboration.

Boise, ID is one of the safest metros in the area, and while the mall still has traffic, it is in no way thriving.

I know it's low hanging fruit, but malls dying has little to do with demographics. It's a part of the equation, but it has much more to do with how people buy and receive goods than malls being unattractive.

There's still a place for Malls. Perhaps a little downscaled??? Lakeside ain't bad at all

Yeah I figured if it survived the downward spiral that killed Esplanade mall and subsequently Clearview it would make it but I never thought it would comeback like it did. Nearly every space is occupied and the food court is seemingly always busy.

We went to the Mall of La(Bluebonnet @ I-10 in Baton Rouge) over the holidays.
I enjoyed it. Seeing so many people out and about shopping and eating and stuff.

I know it was the holidays but the mall here was packed early and often(we went 3 times over a week).
Could be something to it.

Esplanade was a great mall, but located far away from anything. Lakeside has a great central location, even for the northshore people and is surrounded by other good shopping and dining options. But moreso they’ve made some smart improvements over the years, most notably parking expansions.

Southland Mall in Houma is beyond on death's door. Ghost town walking around in there. Only a few stores left.
