Whether it's intelligent or not is a different discussion. Suggesting that a victim of theft has a modicum of responsibility for thieves' actions using a something which was stolen is what pisses me off.

The thief is 100% responsible 100% of the time and the fact that ANYBODY thinks there is even a discussion to be had here is ridiculous and indicative that we have a very serious cultural and moral problem in this country.

The thief is always 100% accountable for what they do just as you are 100% accountable for what you do, I am not talking about legal responsibility I am discussing what we as responsible gun owners SHOULD do for the betterment of our society.

A real issue is most would feel responsible if a thief broke into their truck and found a gun to use on their family a caused a tragedy for them but somehow if it is used against somebody else they are immediately able to dismiss any responsibility, says a lot about our society.

Responsible in an indirect way? Sure.

Legally responsible? Nope.

The idiots who shoot people are solely responsible for gun violence.
Pretty simple really

where should one store a gun while out at a place where carrying a gun on your person is illegal?

Only a fricking idiot would ask such a question.

I guess robbery victims are to blame for having money?

In a secure lock box.

ETA: lock’er down and console vault make some pretty good options.

Sorry, I should have mentioned it doesn’t do any good if it’s not bolted to something solid. They’re going to stop someone with time and the right tools, but they may be all that is needed to stop a smash and grab, especially in broad daylight.

wouldn't locking your glove box and or console stop a smash and grab for a thief who doesn't have the tools to unbolt a car safe?

If someone is leaving valuables in plain sight or leaving their cars unlocked, I agree that it's pretty irresponsible. But calling someone a dumbass for not buying a $500 safe bolted to their car is ridiculous. In general, blaming others for being robbed is dumb. Sure, there are extra precautions that can be taken (for a hefty price for some), but at the end of the day, thieves are thieves. And thieves can strip a car of a lot of things pretty damn quickly. People shouldn't be expected to construct fort knox around their personal property to avoid being labeled as contributing to gun violence as the OP suggested.

Not to mention, instances where you actually need to use your gun happen very quickly and unexpectedly. If you forget to unlock that gun safe in your vehicle, that may be more time than you have and that gun becomes a heavy paperweight in a locked box.

I mean if we are going to deal out ratios they are more responsible than the gun manufacturer by being irresponsible.

But no, the person pulling the trigger is 100% responsible.

Well they’re not $500, and I didn’t call anyone a dumbass, so there’s that. But a locked console or glove box is better than nothing for temporary storage. Honestly, most of these gun thefts are not happening during the day, except in certain urban areas. It’s usually people leaving their guns overnight.

ETA: I forgot to mention that I don’t like the idea of a gun being locked up when I need it either, which is why I carry. Everybody has to have their own plan, but the best place for a gun while you’re in your car is on your person or in a secure holster that’s accessible but won’t go flying in a wreck.

Agree but they would need bolt cutters and I doubt car thieves are lugging that around.

Yeah screw that. Mine comes in the hotel with me. The only time I leave it in the lock box is if I'm working (can't bring in the office) or running errands.

I think as long as the gun owner makes a reasonable attempt to secure their weapon, then they're good. Owning a gun carries responsibilities, and part of that responsibility is keeping your weapon safe from those who would turn around and use it on you.
