My friend's wife used to work at a credit union, and she showed us how much the dealerships actually paid for vehicles and then how much they sold them for. It was nauseating to see how much hundreds of percent profit they made. She said she saw this daily, and it was always like this.

Have friends in the business. You have to remember that misinformed people far outweigh informed people.
That 60k vehicle can be stretched and skewed almost any way to get a note that is "comfortable" for the consumer.
And yes, the dealer always wins, even if you think you got a good deal.
Sales Managers can make 400k plus a year. I'm not kidding.

I bought a new work car a month ago. I called around, sent emails, all saying what I wanted, cash deal, and I would pay msrp + tt&l, no dealer add-on bullshite. I took a couple days, but I had an agreement before I drove to lot to pick up car. They make plenty of money with msrp.

It’s been common for several years now so it’s just normal.
Car dealers made it happen.
Now people just accept it.

That’s brutal. I found myself in a position to need to buy a few months ago. They wouldn’t budge a dollar on the car I wanted, but they gave a significant amount of money on my trade. I didn’t feel like I “won” anything, but I don’t believe the bottom line on that transaction put me any worse than it would have been five years ago like for like.
This, same thing, deal was not as good but I still worked them a bit and received considerably more for my trade. I did look around the dealer and a see a lot of suckers though.

Car notes would be a lot more comfortable without all the bullshite required "addons" from the dealership that I neither need nor want.

Tbh I would be perfectly fine if the new car industry went fixed price across the board. Here is price..buy or not. Same for all. Get rid of sales people completely. The idea they get to sit around and try to screw people all day is pathetic. Cars are a necessity…regardless of the niceties some have.
100%
Ford has the big time red arse at their dealers. Especially for marking up Broncos and Lightnings.
I believe they are really looking at how they can cut out the dealers.

Depends on the automaker and dealer. I was looking at Honda Civics and Mazad3 for the past few months.
One Honda dealer wanted to charge me 5k over MSRP on a 26k Civic, but offered me about 2k over on my trade in value.
Another Honda dealer was charging 5k over MSRP and would drop it to 2500 if you had a trade in.
Mazda dealer wasn't charging over MSRP but tired to add on a 2k "Protection Package".

That dinosaur is dying out as we speak. More people are getting comfortable with the DTC model. DTC cars are inevitable. I imagine there will be dealerships where you can go look at and test drive cars. Then, you place your order direct from the manufacturer.

There are still a few volume dealers that will do under MSRP.
You will have to travel and do an order though.
I know a Jeep Dealership in VA, that is still friendly

Maybe very small amount are, the first two years of production are allocated. GM also has a clause in place to prevent flippers.

No unless you are a sucker, most new vehicles are sold orders then you get to wait on the booming transportation industry.

Said it was "policy" to run a credit check on everyone regardless even if they weren't financing. He walked. Sales manager was chasing him across the lot, changing his tune and saying an exception can be made. My friend told him to frick off. This happened last week over a $71K truck.

just bought a new car a month back. the used market is completely absurd right now. the dealership i went through charged msrp but wouldnt budge from that. They were good to work with and offered a good lifetime warranty complimentary so I was fine with.

Yep, I have a few big household projects and I'm waiting til summer 2024.
Also, if one is in the market for a car right now, there's no rule against going cheap and low for a year or two. If all cars are +15%, that 15% hurts a lot less when the price of the car is $20k instead of $80k.
Might not be able to carry all of Jaxton and Braxton's friends to travel ball in a brand new Denali, but I would tell them too bad. I'm not being held hostage by a dealer. Period.
