I have a 2013 Ford Fusion, 70k miles. You guys can laugh all you want, but if if lasts me another 10+ years I'm driving it till the end.
Expecting a Ford Fusion to last 20 years is asking a lot.
But your overall point is still valid. There's more cost saving in buying used and nursing it along as far as you can. But most people see cars/trucks as a status symbol or their favorite toy and get a major endorphin rush when they sign that contract at the dealership.

I bought a truck Jan 2021. At that time, the squeeze was just getting started. I had been wanting to buy for a while as my other vehicle was no longer dependable. I had been waiting and waiting for EOY inventory liquidations which never came.
I found a vehicle that I could live with (base model F150 xlt crew cab), no bells and whistles.
I went to the dealership and told them I wanted to pay 32k for the vehicle...They did lower their price to 32k but hid some costs. I agreed to finance with them because I knew they would get a cut of the financing.
Today same truck (newer year model is 50k starting price)
I paid the truck off in 6 months.
If I tried to do that today (tell them what I was willing to pay), I would get laughed off the lot.

They Hyundai dealer in Gonzales isn’t marking up, at least they weren’t a few months ago
They are not. We bought a Palasade from them a few months ago. They were the only dealership that wasn't charging the markups. My wife contacted a shitload of louisiana and texas dealerships.

This. We (American consumers) are the dumb ones for creating this perpetual cycle. We buy stuff just to say we did.

No clue but I know I just went on auto trader and the small engine version of the GLS merc is $115K. They were around $75k last year when the wife was looking. Wtf???

Depends on what you want. Enough dealers are doing msrp or even a slight discount with orders that you can find something not stupid high if you are flexible. Even some of the hot cars that are in less desirable configurations are obtainable. Dealers need to sell the mundane to get that z06

There are always dealer discounts for inhouse financing. If they think your financing 84 months at 6.9% with one of their partner lenders, not necessarily Honda finance, they can and will knock some off the price.

So it puts me in a worse spot than before, three months ago my car was valued at 22k now with only 4k more miles its valued at 11.3k. Nothing else has changed but the mileage.
We bought last March ... got more on our trade than selling it ourselves AND we got 0% financing ... and I pitched a fit (a minor one) when I refused to pay VIN etching. Was ready to walk over $350 lol They removed the charge which was great .. especially as the whole damn windshield needed to be replaced 3 months later.
