Basic rule of thumb used to be $100 shoe lasts 1 year. $200 shoe lasts 2 years. $300 shoe lasts a lifetime.

I've owned a few pair and they lasted a year or 2 wearing them about twice per week. About on par with Johnston and Murphy imo.

Phony heel, paper welt, glued sole with a fake stitch.

Get a shoe with a goodyear welt

For same price, you can get a good used Park or Fifth Avenues on Ebay, shoes that are completely recraftable when you can afford to do so.

There are different “levels” of Cole Haan. Lower end are very crappy, the more expensive ones are less crappy (still not great quality but fine for every day wear). Get the cap toes that are originally priced at $230ish, and you’ll be fine. I have a pair that I purchased when I used to have to go into the office every day. I think I wore them for a year or so and they’ve held up. They are also very comfortable (more comfortable than my AEs).

I bought a pair of all leather shoes from Lord and Taylor back in the day, I screwed them up before they fell apart. They are great shoes

DSW always has a lot of Cole Haan at a better price point, if you have one near you.

FWIW, I have a pair of zerogrands that I like a lot.

Mine fell apart after three months. But I’m hard on shoes.

These were glued together though. So if they sell ones where the sole is stitched together, those would probably be fine.

I usually buy them on sale but I wear Allen Edmonds as everyday shoes. They might cost a little bit more upfront but they are cheaper to own over the the long term. They'll last at least a decade with a couple of resoles.

Rockports.

No break-in time, very comfortable if you walk/stand a lot, long-lasting and not over-the-top expensive.

Some of these higher-end brands like AE and J&M feel like bricks to me. Ecco are perfect for me when it comes to combo of looks/comfort.
