I have two pairs of cole haan shoes. wing tips and standard cap.
Still going for the past 4 years. I wear them often on weekends and vacation or nights out.
Very comfortable.

Well, not using a show horn will prematurely wear out the heel counter. If you can find a cobbler who will repair it, looking at $80 or so just for that job. But it’s your money.
I've heard this before, but I've had a few pairs of nice shoes for a decade that I've resoled a couple times each and my cobbler nor I have noticed them wearing down.
I do loosen the laces completely before putting them on and stick my finger in the back to prevent crushing the heel. I guess I just somehow avoid it like a foot ninja.

Not as good as they used to be, but still a good shoe

You're not a foot ninja; you're simply committed to a work and time intensive process (relatively speaking, obviously) that could easily and quickly be replaced with a shoe horn

I wanted to get some lower end ones that would last a few years that I could throw into the rotation and wear to things like weddings where I know I'll beat them up, not just on the soles. I want to wear my nicer shoes less often, that's the goal.

And I still ended up blowing $440 on two pairs of Meermin's
I suppose I fundamentally misunderstood the OP, apparently

Nah. They've become very basic and will need to be replaced every year and a half depending on how much you walk in them.
