I wear one in high traffic areas like the grocery store. Haven't worn one anywhere else.

Heard someone say it's very effective at keeping others 6 feet away from them. Strangers see the mask and stay clear.

No, it doesn't make people look cautious. It makes them look like arseholes since medical personnel have to reuse masks, due to all the dick-bags who insist on wearing them to go into Starbucks.
