H1B Visas are nothing more than tools used to suppress American wages. They should be outlawed.

They're useful in certain situations but a salary floor increase would keep companies from abusing them while protecting recent college IT graduates.

And the USDOJ. And Apple since they agreed to the settlement.

Apple has agreed to pay $25 million in a settlement with the United States Department of Justice, resolving allegations that the company violated federal laws by favoring immigrant workers over American citizens

So what happens to the money? Does it go to workers who were shafted or does it go to the army of government lawyers and lawfare bitches trying to take down Trump and conservatives?

Sooo they get fined and gladly pay while continuing to do the same and the government gets more money to piss away while the screwed over worker gets nada

Every company that can do this, does do this. So this isn't just an Apple issue.

Apple using child labor should be a bigger concern.

The fine needs to be more than the amount of money they save by not hiring the US engineers.

I just did a little reading on it and it can go to one of 3 places: straight to the general fund of the US Treasury, into the Treasury Investor Protection fund, or another fund used to repay harmed investors. (This is specifically talking about fines levied by the SEC, but it's basically the same for all government agencies like SEC, EPA, DOJ, etc). Here's a snippet from when Facebook got fined $5 billion:
quote:

As for what the Treasury Department does with its money, let’s look at the penalty Facebook received. “There’s a $5 billion check that was deposited in the general fund of the United States. The general fund can be used to fund anything,” Vladeck said. “[It] theoretically might lessen people’s tax payments. But it can be used basically for anything Congress decides.”

It's a slap on the wrist for Apple and it doesn't really help deter them unless they really start upping the fines. And just lol at that comment about it can be used to lessen people's taxes...

I mostly agree. If you have 2 resumes and ones American and other is h1b both with comparable skills, you should be forced to hire the American

Not if the American is less qualified. I'm generally not impressed with what our universities are turning out. A lot of American kids are prioritizing the college experience with a "C's get degrees" mentality while expecting top salaries and the job will teach them what they need to know. The job should not be re-teaching them what they should have already learned; they also should have learned how to learn.

H1B workers are willing to work for less because if they don't have a job they have to leave the United States.

I'm a lifelong I.T. Analyst/Programmer/Engineer.
Trust me, the foreign I.T. workers aren't more skilled than U.S. workers, they are just willing to work for less which drives down wages for all I.T. workers.

For those that say "they'll just offshore the jobs and not worry about visas".
I've lived that and believe me it's a clown show.
Having one engineer in the U.S.A. trying to communicate and get things accomplished with a bunch of unskilled programmers half way around the world that barely speak English is a total clown show.

Can confirm it is a total clown show and even more so when your company decides to use a 3rd party vendor on the other side of the world.

This is any major tech company, not just Apple.

They claim they can’t get anyone to take the jobs they want OR that the foreigners are the only ones who have the skills they need in order to get the visas then hold the visa over the worker to keep them from bolting to a competitor.

Hence why they are called “tech coolies”.

Healthcare does it too. Have you ever wondered why so many hospitalists at major medical centers are from India? It is not because they are better at medicine. It is because the hospital system can pay them less and make them put up with shittier and shittier administrative conditions because they are sponsoring their visa.

Simple solution: raise the floor for starting H1B salaries to $120k which will keep companies from Re-staffing entire departments with H1B visa holders.

Umm, no. Unless you want to pay $800 to get your lawn mowed. Landscaping companies/farmers also use the H1B program.
