re: Appealing grade in English at LSU

I took a graduate level history class while I was at Alabama. It was a little over my head so I didn't participate hardly ever in the in class discussions. I studied enough that I made B's on the papers and the tests. On my first test, I got an 88 but it was scratched through and changed to a 77. There was a note on the test that said, "Your grade has been lowered due to lack of class participation". IT also went on to say I need to start attending class. I took the test to the professor's office the next morning and he even said.."Oh I didn't realize this was you. You have been in class". Then he told me that even though I was there every day, because I didn't speak up, he wasn't changing my grade. He said would consider it going forward if I started participating in the discussion. I dropped the class right then and there.

IIRC, they changed that policy at LSU around '03-04. Now, your grades are averaged

That's ridiculous. Lots of professors are self important, power trippings figs.

frick this generation.
Wants trophies for participating, wants good grades for not participating

Yeah, the syllabus said "Class participation". Every other class I had up to that point that had that verbiage, meant attendance. To be honest, I think that's what his meant too, but didn't want to admit he made a mistake.

What a fricking moron.
It’s more than just showing up to class. It’s about learning to be professional and building relationships.
I’ve gotten my final grades changed several times. Because I was engaged. I showed up, I could speak to the material and I showed up to office hours.
But it’s a symbiotic relationship.
You are, on the other hand, just a fricking parasite.

When a teacher in a different section decides that they don't take attendance and can give the same credit for the same class, then attendance is obviously not in any way part of the necessary curriculum for that course.
This is not true. If you think it's true then you know nothing about how a university works.
First off, I don't give a shite how a university works. Only care I have is giving me my peice of paper to prove I know what I know. If I can work the system in any way, I will. If I can't, I can't. But ultimately the question is how, in any way, is being present a necessary part of the necessary curriculum in any class that doesn't have groups or active in class assessments (quizzes and or some form of participation that demonstrates knowledge, not just that a warm body is present)?
You can keep spouting that it was in the instructions and you knew it from the beginning. You are missing the forest for the trees in the argument. I don't think anyone is at all saying that the teacher has to give him credit or that he has any "legal" foot to stand on. We all know that if the school stands by it, then they stand by it and it's ultimately his responsibility. That's a given. Think he was just looking for advice if anyone has gotten leeway. The argument is that why as in institution would you want to hold this person back? They know what they need to know in order to take another, more advanced class and/or to graduate and proficiently use that knowledge representing your university as an institution that puts out students who grasp the material. If you think a university has some responsibility to only put out degrees to those who exhibit good attendance, you are an idiot.
This is one (of many) reasons college degrees aren't worth all that much anymore. People think this stupid stuff is as important as the actual knowledge. Maybe we shouldn't be dumbing down courses so much that one could pass them without attending. Maybe quit accepting idiots into your school that turn English into a remedial course where the teacher is forced to take attendance just so kids show up. A difficult subject with a good teacher and students will show up without being forced.

If you are a minority of any kind, you can make up almost any BS excuse or accusation and get your grade fixed in a hurry.
So there's that.
If your a white male, you'd have to conveniently start identifying as some transbigenderqueer nonsense and that would probably suffice.

Best classes I was ever in were ones where the teacher said they're not going to take attendance and don't care if we come, but won't be bending over backwards to help if we aren't doing well.
I'm fine with that. I've definitely had some courses where I didn't learn anything in the actual class, so I stopped going and taught myself the material from the textbook instead.

No doubt. Typically a class with an attendance policy (be it taking role or pop quizzes to see who's there) was coupled with a lecture that wasn't worth the time spent there. No one would show up otherwise, so they put an attendance requirement on it.

Which should be a perfectly valid approach, since the point is to learn the material. It sucks when it isn't that way, like for the OP.

So if you don't show, you're not only having points deducted from your participation but also your final grade.

You buy the boy books, send him off to school, and all he wants to do is eat the teacher. smdh

grow up and go to class--the real requires attendance. You should learn this lesson--the world expects you to show up.

Stop bitching and go to class next time. You are not entitled to a passing grade, and I'm guessing the attendance policy was clearly laid out in the syllabus.
You earned the F.

HR recruiter: So, fightingtigers98, I see from your transcript you flunked your English course.
fightingtigers98: Yes sir, I felt like I didn't have to go because I knew it all.
HR recruiter: Thanks son, we'll be in touch.

Yeah LSU has a grade exclusion policy that you can use 3 times.
Go take it this summer. It's just one hour in the morning. Unless you'll be spending too much time this summer jacking off to go to class and get an attendance F again.
Good point. The instructor did the guy a favor by giving him an F, because now he can retake the class.

Try.
Its preposterous.
Here's your argument.
Its none of their business whether you attend. They are not your boss.
You passed the academics.
Its not a factory where you must clock in or don't get paid.
You get out of school what you can.
Appeal.
