Theres a girl from Raceland whos father is a Catholic priest. She looks nothing like her moms husband and it was always rumored her mom was fricking the priest.

For those calling for priests to be married, I’m failing to see the connection between getting married and not committing sexual sin/crimes.

There’s the idea that perverts are attracted to priesthood Bc of the celibacy rule, as these are men who dont care about being married anyway.

And then the celibacy rule dissuades good men who would be good priests but who also want a family/sex. Which leaves a higher proportion of perverts.

The priest that was at our church when I was younger is no longer a priest. He’s now married to the women he was sleeping with at the time. They have a few kids now. I hear they are all Catholic.

If the church knew, he wouldn’t be a priest anymore.

Because the Catholic Church does not want to have to support wives and a family in a addition to the priests. It all about the mighty green.

It's also about the insane bureaucracy of the Church. The priests "work" for the diocese or the order, both of which have tremendous bureaucratic organization that costs money. There's tons of money being sucked out of the collection plate that goes to fund this bureaucracy.

Priests can also be moved around more often, etc.

Most other religions have very decentralized staff. The church has a board which hires the minsters. Sometimes the board wants a new minister and sometimes the minister wants to leave for a new church. And you have more money staying at the church level to be able to pay a salary to a minister enough that he can have a family.

Then what happens in a divorce or death? How do they split the assets?

In most cases the house is owned by the church, so nothing there, everything else is personal assets so it gets split like any other divorce.

That is outright wrong. The Protestant churches (which allow married clergy) Have higher incidents of sexual abuse, school teachers (which allow marriage) have as high a rate of abuse. Both of those groups show that fact by insurance claim payments to victims.

This isn’t solely a Catholic thing not because priests can’t marry.

The issue to me seems to be abuse occurs in professions where the adult is held in high trust and spends a lot of time around kids.

So priests, ministers, teachers, coaches, scout leaders, etc, all fit that mold.

Allowing priests to marry would help alleviate the priest shortage. I don't think it changes much of the dynamic around abuse.

If the scandal is too much for you to bear, go to another church.

They won't, doctrine is clear. Lots of other churches will allow their pastors to marry.

FWIW, I am Catholic and attend Mass every Sunday

yeah yeah yeah the problems aren't with the church they're with the people in the church. heard that one a million times. there's something about the whole structure of the church that lets freaks slip through and make it all the way to the top.

It's so clear that there are a hundred or so married Catholic priests in the US. I believe the Anglican Rite allows former married ministers to become priests and there are a bunch of former married protestant ministers who converted and became married priests.

Not good, position of authority, etc. but good to know there are some straight priests out there.

I guess this is what you call a priest who couldn’t get Nun.

I wouldn't say near 90% would go away, but it would def. help.
What the hell. Let women be priest. My problem is that we know some people do bad stuff, it's just sad that the church instition keeps it secret and was still allowing priest to still serve.

I mean it’s very clear that all of those cases are converts and not newly ordained, unmarried Roman Catholics.

"Theologically, priests serve in the place of Christ and therefore, their ministry specially configures them to Christ. As is clear from Scripture, Christ was not married (except in a mystical sense, to the Church). By remaining celibate and devoting themselves to the service of the Church, priests more closely model, configure themselves to, and consecrate themselves to Christ."

They will never let them get married. You can blame Vatican II for a lot of the degrading of the Church. They used to vet the seminarians very well and kick the gays and perverts out. Today, not so much. We are fighting to fix the church though. The Church Militant on you tube goes after the sick priests hard. It is amazing to watch! Church Militant YouTube Page
