He certainly is/was part of the problem - but - here are the presidents since Shuttle was developed - Nixon approved the concept and program - then Carter, Reagan, GHW Bush, Clinton, GW Bush, Obama - none of them had the vision to leverage NASA and plan for the next generation of space exploration - pitiful.

They have a Saturn V in Huntsville, AL that is really neat to see. My son went to space camp this year and we toured the Marshall Space Center and it's amazing stuff, if you've never been I highly recommend going.

The Infinity Center near Stennis recently obtained a Saturn V first stage. They are going to work on restoring it, but is still on display.
Infinity is a really nice place to visit. I wish they would put the Apollo 4 CM back on public display, though. I also wonder what happened to the Jupiter C rocket they had on display at the old visitor's center, too.

Hell no, that would be the worst scenario. The DoD getting involved with NASA is what led to the Space Shuttle, a bloated, expensive, unnecessary space flight vehicle. For the cost of that we could have developed a much better method of sending humans into space and a different system for larger payloads.

I was in late elementary school when the Mercury program started. The Space Race years were an incredible time to be alive. Every space mission was cover 24/7 on tv. There was such a feeling of national pride. Everyone wanted to be an astronaut or engineer. Technical spin offs in everyday life were visibly obvious in many aspects of life. In school everyone knew the importance of math and science in school. Looking back it the national motivation to achieve excellence was incredible.
The space program was way more than putting a man on the moon. It was about R and D, aeronautics, miniaturization, computers, logistics, medicine, physiology, engineering, mathematics etc. it was an all encompassing effort. The effort was truly inspirational.
Slide rules were just part of life back then. Don't ever underestimate the computation power of a rule.

What has happened to NASA is a Republicans wet dream - it's been privatized. Elon is now in charge of building, NASA is now a huge part of researching and creating amazing new technologies to go to SpaceX and Boeing... It's just unfortunate that Elon is Mr. "Cut spending everywhere" and this happens:

My dad worked for NASA and helped design (he was a chemical engineer) and build the Saturn. One Christmas several years ago we each got a copy of the schematics of the rocket that had recently been declassified; one of the best Christmas presents I've gotten & still have it!!

what gets me is the F-35 program from concept to now is what...25 years old?
The Apollo program was first conceptualized in 1959 and ten years later a man was on the moon. (Kennedy knew of the program well before his man to the moon speech)
