How well does it work? Thinking about making the investment to properly learn French (bucket list item).

Am I better off paying for lessons with an instructor, or will Rosetta Stone do the trick?

Rosetta Stone and Duolingo are great tools to help you learn; however, there is no substitute for immersion.

Right, so in the absence of the opportunity for immersion, is Rosetta Stone my next best bet?

I intend to spend time in France on occasion (1-3 times per year for a few days at a time), but immersion isn't an option.

Your library may have a copy. Try that before paying.

Not the software, but having already mastered ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, I used the actual stone to teach myself Greek one summer. Beautiful country, but I wore patches over both my eyes during that time. Ya know, the whole immersion thing.

yeah, I remember that - except it wasnt a stone, it was a handle of Jack, which you rubbed like a genie in a lamp on your back porch, and that wasnt Greek....it was just gibberish

congrats

Neither Rosetta Stone or Duolingo will make you fluent, but they will give you a pretty good start to the language. Duolingo is free and basically the same thing.

The next best thing to immersion is youtube. A lot of french language stuff on there to help you learn.

Duolingo and living language are what I used to learn Portuguese. I got the Living Language pack from Barnes and Nobles for 30 bucks and duolingo is free. After you build up some basics skills you will want to read novels and listen to music in your target language. As you advance, start watching movies in your target language and, finally, find people to converse with in the language. Keep a journal and start writing your thoughts in your target language. The purpose of this is to get your mind used to communicating ideas in the target language.

Immersion is overrated. I took French for 3 years in high school and a semester in college, got all A's, and couldn't carry on a conversation with a French person to save my life. A couple of those teachers were the type that only want to speak French in class. What's all this have do with immersion, you ask? French people speak way too fricking fast. Even if you could understand most of what they are saying if it were written, you won't catch a single word when they speak it - especially when you throw in the accent. It's like when you watch a James Bond movie and say to yourself, "I really need to watch this with subtitles, cause I can barely understand a word this British fuq is saying," but multiply that by 1,000 for the French. So even with immersion, you won't pick up a single word. The final answer is that it is impossible to learn to speak French unless you're born and raised in France. If you want to learn to read and write in French, that's another story. Rosetta is probably the quickest.

That's not full immersion. By immersion, I mean go to the country where it is spoken and live there. Having someone teach French to you a few times a week only in French is simply that: It's a class not immersion. I went the the summer camp in Nova Scotia when I was a kid. For 2 weeks, we only spoke French. I learned more in 2 days than I had all year in class.

Duolingo is okay and free. I suggest buying a workbook so you can test yourself. Also buy a pocket dictionary.

You can also listen to French podcasts. They have them for beginners.
