Total scam.
Anytime they start offering conditions and special shite..avoid.
Unless it's "meet here and pay this much cash", ignore
Well there may be a few different legit circumstances for a car purchase but in general if a CL seller or buyer has a bunch of ridiculous conditions and a story..run

that shite reads like it was written by a Nigerian prince....
I wouldn't just walk away, but I would certainly do things my way and omit all of that computerized bullshite.
If you want to see the truck, tell them that you do face to face transaction at a bank with cash for clear title only. if you want to get the vehicle checked out first, go to their town and the two of you bring it to a mechanic of your choosing to get an opinion.
no deposit...if they sell it before you can get it, good for them. I would not give them one penny before the actual title swap takes place.

Avoiding Scams
Deal locally, face-to-face —follow this one rule and avoid 99% of scam attempts.
Do not extend payment to anyone you have not met in person.
Beware offers involving shipping - deal with locals you can meet in person.
Never wire funds (e.g. Western Union) - anyone who asks you to is a scammer.
Don't accept cashier/certified checks or money orders - banks cash fakes, then hold you responsible.
Transactions are between users only, no third party provides a "guarantee".
Never give out financial info (bank account, social security, paypal account, etc).
Do not rent or purchase sight-unseen—that amazing "deal" may not exist.
Refuse background/credit checks until you have met landlord/employer in person.

Some advice OP.
CL is a great place to find good used vehicles.
When you call them, ask "how long have you had the vehicle?" (Intentionally be vague)
When they pause and don't really answer, it's because they are a dealer posting on the owner section. Immediately hang up.
If they appear to be legit. You can meet in a bank parking lot during working hours to inspect the vehicle. If you like it and agree to terms. You can meet again inside your bank to withdrawal money and exchange the title.
Any other requests from the buyer....walk away. It's for everybody's protection.

I will use e Bay in this transaction for our protection. If you are not aware of this program, you should know that it will allow you to test and inspect the truck before paying me. The inspection period will be set to 7 days and I think that is enough time for you to make a decision about the truck. If you won`t like my truck, you notify e Bay and you send it back at my expen
100% scam. Face to face or no deal.

While on the subject of buying off CL & other sites,
There are a lot of cars today being offered as "original equipment" or "numbers matching".
Always approach these with skepticism until you are absolutely sure. Documentation can be forged, parts re-stamped even VIN & engine data plate numbers altered.
Selling clones is a big business and a lot of buyers are getting suckered into buying something that may only be worth half of what they are paying.

Yes, it's a scam. I have a friend looking for an RV. He got a very similar response on eBay.

Always meet face to face in a well lit public area. Anyone who can't meet at the local walmart isn't worth responding to. Remember, trust but verify.
I bought my truck off of craigslist and financed through my bank. The seller was cautious and they should be. When we agreed on price I had my bank send me a check for the amount. When I had the check in my hand I met the seller at their bank and when they had the check they signed the title over to me and I dealt with all the registration.

That person's email strongly resembles the examples on the Craigslist site to identify scams. This is their example:
On their own site www.craigslist.org/about/scams
quote:
First of all I want to thank you for your interest for my car. I sell it at this price($2,980.00 ) because I have been divorced recently. Now the car is in my property and as a woman i don't need it. This car is in excellent working conditions, no scratches, flaws or any kind of damage, slightly used in 100% working and looking conditions and comes with a clear title.
From the beginning you have to know that for the payment I request only secure pay, I prefer the payment to be done using eBay services. We will use a safe payment method because I am affiliated at eBay and I have a purchase protection account for $20,000.00 The final price that I want for this car is $2,980.00 including shipping and handling.
If you are interested in buying it please provide me your full name and address so I can initiate the deal through eBay.
I will wait your answer very soon.

I'm looking to pick something up for my son. Preferably a Chevy Silverado on the cheap. Never bought anything off the site before. Share your experience and/or advice. So, emailed about a truck that I was interested in. Seller emailed back with more details and multiple photos. I asked for the vehicle's location and got the following email back. Scam?
yea I sell vehicles on craigslist for a living. It's a scam. They'll want some western union crap and you never see it again.
I don't know what your idea of cheap silverado is but this is tax season, so add about $1000 extra to the true value the next 40 days to anything you look at b/c prices are soaring and will until April. A $2000 silverado is gonna be beat up, rugged interior, ugly paint, and 200,000 + miles.

Yeah that scam is all over the place on CL. Same story same everything
Anyone who says they are out of state or wants to use trans union or anything like that or gives you a sob story, it's a phony ad.
If it's too good to be true, it deffinitly is. You learn after a while to be very cynical about the ads, but you can find good cars on there

Been buying off eBay and CL since probably about 2001 or so. I usually use Autotrader for vehicles because eBay aint really got shite and CL search system is a fricking joke and they dont email notify for daily search results that meet specified criteria.
CL is free so its full of scam artists. More than any other site. When they start talking funny about payment and make long elaborate stories, run away. They are trying too hard and its never real. In the hundreds of transactions Ive done the real ones were always quick and simple. I usually only use CL for large items that cant be shipped easily or cheaply.
Also, LA, MS and to a lesser extent, AL Craigslist generally have really shitty products at really shitty prices. I find people here and MS generally buy really shitty products and when they are ready to sell they want damn near full price for it. When they are buying they want to pay beggars change for it. What can I say? People here are really shitty consumers. Emotional drunks maybe?
Your best bet is Texas, FL, TN or GA CL. Thats where the best deals are in our area.

Hi again, Thank you very much for getting back to me but I would like to clarify some things first. I am selling the truck at this price because my husband passed away not long ago (he was very sick) and this truck brings me bad memories and that's the reason why I want to sell it asap. Another reason for selling it is because I work in military and right now I'm on a military base. We are training and getting ready to leave the country.
All of this is irrelevant.
quote:
The truck is already at the shipping company ready for delivery because someone agreed to buy it, but in the end he never got the loan. For this reason, the shipping is already paid for.
Why state all of this crap. If they are paying for the shipping, just say that.
quote:
I will use e Bay in this transaction for our protection.
Contact Ebay after you get their information FIRST.
quote:
If you are not aware of this program, you should know that it will allow you to test and inspect the truck before paying me. The inspection period will be set to 7 days and I think that is enough time for you to make a decision about the truck.
Easily verifiable by looking at the conditions set by Ebay and what Ebay allows to be modified.
quote:
If you want to continue the purchase, please reply with your full name, delivery address and phone number so I can start the transaction with e bay and ask them to send you the terms of this transaction. ( with no further obligation or fees).
Feel like if there are any problems, this is where they will come from. If this is a scam they are trying to show you somehow accepted this deal. Sign nothing, and provide them nothing in writing till you know exactly who you are dealing with.

Because when I want to sell a vehicle, I am willing to ship it to a prospective customer for inspection at my expense. He can drive it around for seven days however he pleases - at the racetrack, demolition derby, whereever. And then he can send it back to me, again at my expense. And I'm totally cool with this.
