How does OT view this? My parents are pretty poor so thinking about moving them in but they are reluctant which I don’t understand.

Bought our last house with the expectation of moving one or both of my parents in eventually because they won't be able to physically maintain their larger house and yard than they need. Either that or moving in with them if they refuse to move.

One of my neighbors did. Makes sense - they don't spend your inheritance.

My MIL now lives with us. Big mistake. I now have an old woman stuck in her ways, a headstrong wife, and a 16 yr old daughter that constantly clash about EVERYTHING. Stress levels are maxed out, everyday. It may seem like a good idea, but it really isn't.

We designed this house when we rebuilt if from a decrepit 100 + year old farm house to something more comfortable with 36" wide doors and minimal stairs.
We've been able to have family who have a son totally dependent on his wheelchair come out several times to give them a break (we even have a very large bathroom which was langniappe, not planned for what we called "our old fart house" but turns out to be a necessity for their family to come out.
My parents were long dead, and my husband's parents had assorted mental problems on top of different dementias. That would have required totally different designs.

My grandma lived with my family when I was growing up. It was awesome having her around. I don't think I was able to beat her at ping pong until she was about 80.

I understand what you are saying, but as a parent it’s my responsibility to provide for my retirement. It’s not my kid’s job to pay my bills. In the OP’s situation it sounds like they just don’t have any money.

This is why my parents nor my in-laws will ever live with us. I have no desire to have anyone else’s opinion influencing my house. My wife is enough to deal with.

Asian countries seem to be pretty good with this. Different generations living together, it resolves alot of problems and cuts out unnecessary expenses and such plus keeps a more cohesive family unit. I can see problems if your parents are assholes though

In an ideal world where it's feasible and works out that way for everyone. We live in far from an ideal world though

I would rather die in a pile of my own piss than move in with my kids. I worked too hard for my dignity and independence.
