I currently live 17 hrs away from where I grew up. I feel no remorse at all because I fit in down South way better than I did up North.

So you are a Yankee/Midwest transplant to the South?

I've lived 27 years in the town I live in now because I chose to, and my folks and the rest of family followed me.

I was/am quite close to my dad and my paw paw. My paw paw is dead now and dad is single and has no family aside from me and my siblings left.

I mentioned the idea of moving in 5 or so years and he asked if I'd mind if he went with us. He doesn't want to live with us but just live nearby. He's almost 70 now and I'd absolutely have no objections.

Nah, just reinforces what I already know. I don't belong down there

My hometown is a tiny town in NELA and it is one of the poorest in the country and I currently live in Miami. Hell no! I do not feel guilty leaving.

My parents died seven months apart. I was working in Houston and they were in my hometown in Virginia. The two trips I took to see them before they died tore me up as I was driving out of town to fly back to Intercontinental because I knew I'd never see them again.

With both I'd made trips every other weekend home to help take care of them, and those trips didn't tear me apart. The final trips ....I cried the hour and a half to DC. I will never forget that emptyness.

I feel like a million bucks every time I roll out of there.

Had an uncle who felt the same about his hometown. We’re both right.

Guilty...no.

That said, I do wonder what things would've been like if my family did not move when I was younger and we stayed in Metairie.

Hell no I don’t. I live 5 hours from my hometown. My hometown has turned into a dump.

You have to better yourself and move wherever that takes you to. The folks understand that even though it makes them sad. Going through the same feelings myself since leaving home visiting over Christmas.

Not really guilty. Just conflicted.

I had a great childhood and my hometown is a great place to be from. It’s just not a great place to live right now.

Every time I visit, I’m reminded of why I left and will probably never return. I sincerely think that the majority of the people who still live there (including my parents) would be much happier somewhere else.

On one hand, I want to be near my parents and spend time with them. On the other, it’s my life and I want a career, wealth, and opportunity for my children.

If my parents were faced with the same choices that I was, they likely wouldn’t have stayed either. It was a different world in the 1970s when they were settling down. It made sense for them. It doesn’t for my generation.

This. And your parents almost certainly know this.

I live in my hometown and love it. I’m around family and old friends and have other friends from LSU days who come often. It was a tough decision to move back, but the right one for me. No regrets.
