So without boring you with scientific babble I developed a chronic condition called graft versus host disease on account of my stem cell transplant for relapsed leukemia. At it's most basic level my new immune system sees my whole body as a foreign body and attacks it to no end if not managed. You want some of this as it eradicates any remaining cancer cells but too much can kill you. I take a variety of meds off label to control it and for the most part it does what it needs to do. It mostly affects my lungs now as it has erased about 65% of my lung function. I usually don't have to use steroids but had a real bad lung flare up a couple of months ago that required me to be on supplemental oxygen because my lung gvhd flared really badly. Thankfully, I no longer need supplemental oxygen, but it's a small example of what can happen when the condition becomes active again. Steroids have tons of side effects but they can often help get the condition under control again. I'm lucky as I don't really need steroids often, but there are some other gvhd people that I've met that have been on them for years.

A variety of things but I'm taking it for nerve pain in my feet and legs.

My wife takes it and hasn't gained any weight.

I could not tolerate it. I made it up to 300mg a day.
I’m a nurse so I am charting on a computer constantly. Over time like the whole world I’ve learned to type. When I was typing with the two finger “hunt and peck” method again, that was it.

Why are you taking it?
Had family on it for cancer so the chemo killed any appetite
They kept weight or lost it while on it

How did it affect your organs?
If memory serves you have to watch kidneys or liver when on it.

How long were you on it before this started?
I started on 300 mg at bedtime and have started taking 200-300 mg in the mornings.

No effect. Was not on it long enough. To answer the question below this one, we are talking a 2-3 wk period.
It was prescribed for nerve pain (cervical radiculopathy). I was switched to topamax. Side effect of kidney stones for topamax, so I got one of those.
It was a rough 6 weeks.

Kinda like organ transplant. Steroids are used to help suppress the immune system from attacking the new organ

Its a seizure drug that also helps with nerve pain.
It was given to me after I broke my neck in a car accident and had surgery and severed a bunch of nerves in my neck and face. I was only on it a few weeks because it made my blood pressure go up. you have to wean off of it when you take it so you don't induce a seizure.

Had it prescribed to me and took it for a while. I really didn't like the way it made me feel. I eased off of it, and haven't taken it since.

"Neurontin (gabapentin) is an anti-epileptic drug, also called an anticonvulsant. It affects chemicals and nerves in the body that are involved in the cause of seizures and some types of pain.
Neurontin is used in adults to treat neuropathic pain (nerve pain) caused by herpes virus or shingles (herpes zoster).
The Neurontin is also used to treat seizures in adults and children who are at least 3 years old."
