It’s amazing when you can go outside during the summer and not immediately break a sweat.

Yep. It was great to me to go hiking in June and it be 74 degrees.

I remember it being gloomy/overcast more than I was used to, but I don't remember it bothering me that much. Granted, I was only there for 5 months total.

I have spent 6 weeks there in the fall and winter and never saw the sun. Gloomy doesn’t even begin. But that short summer period ( like when I was there this summer and didn’t see a cloud for 10 days ) is GLORIOUS.

Here is what I’ve learned about weather after living in some extreme climates. It’s all about the sun. Cold is fine- if there is sun. Like the front range of Colorado. But grey skies take a toll over time.

Family members lived up around Seattle for a few years. After a year of the gloomy season, they purchased a condo in Vegas and spent 6 or 7 months out of the year there instead of dealing with it.

I lived in Tacoma for 15 years before moving to the desert two years ago. The gloom can get to you at times. Going 30-40 days at a stretch sometimes can get old. Summer is typically awesome but can also be pretty short some years, starting after July 4th and ending in September.

Best way I can describe Tacoma is Seattle in the 90's. It was still fairly affordable until 5 or 6 years ago but that's changed as cost has driven people further out from Seattle. The still affordable areas are in Lakewood and Spanaway but some are rough areas.

Lots of amazing country within a short drive.

Is the gloom really that big of an issue?

It is from mid October into April. It’s the rainy season (more like constant drizzle season) combined with the dark season. Seattle is almost at latitude 48, so very short winter days.

The rest of the year is fabulous with the reverse. Dry season combined with long northern latitude days.

Also, what is Tacoma like?

It’s a mixed bag. shite hole in places and nice in others. Downtown has recovered a bunch from 30 years ago when it was no go zone. Hilltop Tacoma was traditionally the worst neighborhood in the state, but it has been gentrified some. The nicer areas of Tacoma are near the water. Surrounding suburbs also a mixed bag. Gig Harbor is really nice while Parkland is a shithole.

More the violent communists and homeless people that will bash your brains in are the bigger problem.

I lived there for work in Seattle for six months.,September to February. It was cloudy, raining, or misty 90% of the time. On the day I left to fly back to NOLA, it started snowing when I was on the way to SeaTac, and by the time the plane took off, the pilot said we were the last plane that was cleared for takeoff, the airport was being shut down. So sometimes Seattle gets winter weather.

After I spent about a month in NOLA, I was sent to another jobsite in San Diego. Huge weather contrast between Seattle and San Diego.

I've lived in the the Desert Southwest and West Virginia, when you're in WV you crave the sun, while when you're in the desert you have a deep human feeling that craves a cloudy rain fill day.

I'd take the desert though

Summers are beautiful. Winters are gray and depressing, and its not an exaggeration when they say its really gray. Most days Late oct- end of March are Gray. Politics are overwhelmingly blue as others have stated, so if that bothers you, not a great fit.

Outdoor activities are plentiful and always do able if you are into that.

We stayed on Lake Cushman in July for 8 days and had perfect sunny weather the whole time. One of the most beautiful places we've ever been.

tacoma is terrible - 50% of downtown is vacant and boarded up. covid hysteria and wokeness killed that city dead.

seattle is cool but way too expensive and still not back to 2000-2016 heydey - might never be as good as it was

i love rain so thats not an issue

Most people I’ve spoken to say they could only last a couple years and they actually start suffering from seasonal depression due to the gloom. All though some say it doesn’t bother them and they absolutely love it.

Cloudy, cool, and rainy is my favorite weather. We have family up there and every time we have a cloudy, cool, and rainy winter day here I text them and tell them we’re having a “Seattle weather day” down here.

The mental image of him sitting fuming in his car while his ice cream cake melts still makes me laugh.

He's also admitted to never once leaving the downtown core of Seattle the entire two years he lived there so it's kind of on him that it sucked so bad.

I live about 30 miles out of Seattle but I rarely go there, obvs
I moved up here in 1991 (hence the name)
Yeah the winters get old, mostly because the days are so short, it's dark when you get to work and dark when you get home.
But the summers are great and spring started early this year so it's been pretty decent since April. And the shorter days from winter turn into longer days in the summer.
And today it's really nice, I just played a round of disc golf, 70 degrees, sunny with some clouds.
Tacoma is kinda like a big city but it's not that big and there's lots of things going on but I wouldn't necessarily want to live there.

I moved here in the mid 90s and loved it, twas a utopia to me. Amazon and the policies that brought down the West Coast cities did a number on it but it seems some aspects are getting better. The state as a whole could use some better politicians and a change if only temporary.
