I went to church camp as a teenager with them in the late 80s. Back then Willie went by the name Jess. We were typical kids, liked playing basketball and softball, talking about the cute girls. Two of the prettiest were a pair of friends named Casey and Korie - yes that Korie who is now married to Willie. She was very sweet and had a quiet but friendly disposition. I also remember Missy, I had a slight crush on her, she was very pretty and just cool to be around. All of them were absolute solid individuals, good-hearted people who take Christianity seriously. I haven't seen any of them in over 30 years so I can't comment on today. But they were very kind, happy, encouraging people when I knew them then, so I would not be surprised that they are now.

Maybe the first time I ever read a 3 page thread at this place about someone where nobody had any thing bad to say about said person

I played alot of pickup basketball at the West Monroe rec center with Willie back in the early 90's. When we see each other around town we shake hands and speak briefly.
Phil baptized me at WFR church a few years back. Went to his house in the woods one afternoon after church because a lady wanted to baptized in the river. After we got done, he cooked us a hambuger.
Dude is legit as they come. I don't think he'd care if he had any money, power, water, plumbing. He could live off the land for the rest of his life and be happy. His place had a high fence around it with a sign that reads, "This property protected by guns."

You act like they grew beards for the show. They had beards well before the show. A lot of the men that went to whites ferry road church with them had the big beards. It not a gimmick for the show.
What brought about the late change to appearance though? They went awhile without to suddenly only start doing it not too long before the show. I get they say faith, but the timing is a bit suspicious.

I assure you that if there was some skeletons in the closet that they would be brought out by now.
Phil had some that they tried to smear him with but he owned them and accepted responsibility. He made no qualms about his past struggles.
That is called INTEGRITY.

I've heard Phil say many times, the only people who don't have hair on their face are women and children, and I am neither.
But it's probably more of a calling card.

They all grew beards for hunting season and would shave them in the summer. Eventually they decided to keep them year round because that's how people came to know them.
I've heard them talk about it numerous times on their Unashamed podcast. They even mention people using their beach pictures to call them out as posers.

I don't really think people think they are posers. It more looks like Hollywood using their appearance to sell a stereotype. Sellouts would be the better term if you wanted to be derogatory. I don't find it that derogatory though, I want to sell out.
Most of us don't really know these people from watching the TV show, we don't live around them, but that world is all a bit artificial. There is more depth to them like anyone in reality TV.

They talk the talk and walk the walk when it comes to their beliefs. At least Phil does 100%

I owned several of their hunting videos a good many years before the show. I can vouch that they were pretty hairy dudes then, at least during hunting season.

I know it came out after the show that he had a daughter he didn't know about. Once he realized it he embraced her. Phil was a terrible person before his conversion and has been transparent with that part of his life. I think when people say that he walks the walk of his faith, it is understood to mean since his conversion to Christianity since no one can walk the walk of a faith they do not yet possess.

its actually a genius move. If they ever get tired of the spotlight, they can just shave and nobody would recognize them.

People with “them’s good christian people” reputation shouldn’t be assumed to be good people.
The nation’s penitentiary system is chock full of inmates who were once “good christian” people.

You mean human beings are not what they claim or often fail to live up to the standards they claim? I for one am shocked, shocked I tell you. Thank you for this enlightening revelation.

Honestly, if it wasn't for his conversion, none of their lives would have played out the way it has. No Duck/Buck Commander, no Duck Dynasty, no books, no Podcasts, no Phil the land barron on the Ouachita River. Phil was a bad dude that took no shite before he found Christ. It took a preacher walking into his bar on request from his sister to plant a seed. She was the only one that still saw something in him. He had kicked his family out already and everybody else thought he was a lost cause.
I actually grew up as a kid idolizing Phil in the early 80's. My dad took me duck hunting when I was about 8 and I was hooked. I remember getting a cassette tape called the Art of Commanding Ducks from Phil. That must have been '85. I swear I played that thing over and over maybe a million times trying to learn how to duck call. Then one January day my dad told me I could skip school from Lee Junior High and we could go hunting. We drove to some BFE place in West Monroe. It was Phil's place. Dad was in commercial construction back then and one of his Foreman was close to Phil. I spent the day literally in awe. Like Phil was a legend in my mind.
This was right before he filmed his first Duckman video. After that I stayed in touch with him off and on through high school and into college. Back then you could literally just drive out to his place and hang out which wouldn't happen at all these days. However, you were always going to hear about Jesus, which was good. It was always a reset going out there, but it was kinda weird though because I never really got to be that close with Jase or Willie who were my age.
Even funnier, once I made it into the real world and my career, I got into pipeline construction. The company I worked for in maybe the early 2000's built a pipeline that ran through most of Phil's property. That is how I discovered how much land he owned or co-owned and this was way pre Duck Dynasty. We dealt with him a lot and whoever said that he could be shrewd in business was an understatement. More like stubborn and hard headed. I will say this, Phil Roberston and his family are as solid as they come. They could have easily all left West Monroe after Duck Dynasty took off but they didn't and their entire belief system revolves around bringing people to Christ. It is actually puzzling to me that one of them doesn't post on TD. They are huge LSU fans. I honestly think Phil is a true Prophet from God. A modern day Saul to Paul walking among us.

Incidentally just learned Phil has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's.
