I was working for Enron at the time, in flight to Boston on Continental...got routed to Charlotte...no one on the plane had any idea what was happening. We landed in Charlotte with the pilot saying absolutely nothing. It wasn't until we were stopped on the tarmac that we found out a terrorist attack had occurred.

There are way worse places to get stuck. I’d call that an unexpected vacation.
So true. It was a madhouse scramble out of the airport for sure.....I had just gotten out of the Army as a Captain a year prior, and when the plane landed I knew there were some junior Army enlisted on the plane heading home for their mid tour leave; the highest ranking soldier was a Specialist (E-4); I got those guys together and told the Specialist that he was in charge, to keep together as a group and after customs, find a rep from the 25th Infantry Division Army base. They did, and I found out later that they were picked up and put up safely at Schofield Barracks. I knew these kids probably didn't exactly have corporate credit cards (ha ha) or a lot of money so I wanted to make sure they were taken care of.
Afterwords, me and another guy that worked for another company that was in Korea for the same job fair skipped all the lines, jumped on a shuttle to the car rental place and got one of two cars left in stock (miracle). We then cruised the beach checking with hotels (Pre smart phone days remember, plus cell service was just about non existent that day even there). We found rooms at a Waikiki Beach Hilton and got rooms there. We couldn't believe the prices they were charging (in a good way....CHEAP....). They had been told to charge a "distressed traveler rate" and it was less than 80 bucks a night.
Was so bummed out though that even spending 6 days there I didn't really get in the mood to enjoy anything at all.

My mother and father In law were on the Staten Island ferry and watched the planes hit the towers. Got stranded there for a few days too. The ferry’s were not running. It really shook them up for many years.

My wife ( flight attendant) had just landed in dfw for work from her commute flight. Obviously her trip was cancelled. Rented a car and drove home

Some of my older colleagues were in Stamford, CT on business at the time. When they grounded all flights, they just took the rental car back home to Memphis.

I flew Delta to London and then train to Southampton. Then did a walk to fight jetlag exhaustion. Got back to hotel to find everybody in the bar watching tower one attack.
Lots of delays/trouble getting home via Boston/Atlanta.
Brits were outstanding and help helpful. Brit media did not pull punches and really grilled Muslim clerics on TV interviews. Very unlike US PC media.
Got home a week late. Catching a connection in an empty Atlanta airport was bizarre!

My BIL was in DC for meetings. Had to drive and pick him up in Maryland.

What was it like working for "The Smartest Guys In The Room"?
It was my first job after college. Did an internship with Enron between junior and senior year of college. I loved it. Traded gas on Columbia pipeline. Moved over to Enron Energy Services and helped close a huge energy deal with Ocean Spray..hence, I was headed to Boston. They were very generous with expense statements...drinking and strip clubs were not discouraged

Knew people who drove from CA to FL due to travel interruption.
Fortunately, i drove on this particular business trip - only 6hrs.

Lived 35 minutes outside of NYC at the time
Kids at my school lost parents that day
My dad flew out of Hartford the same time
Landed in Atlanta and was like “why are all these people watching the TV?”
He’s convinced - and I agree - that there were terrorists ready to go o other planes that kind of pussied out

Were you flying that day? Love to hear your story.

I was. I was in. A Beechcraft Bonanza out of Mobile enroute to Atl. Air traffic control forced us to land immediately in Monroeville, AL. Was kinda crazy hearing all the radio chatter, we knew something was way wrong but didn’t find out until we landed. Plane was grounded for like 6 weeks, luckily we were able to drive home.

My (former) MIL was in the air at the time and got routed to the podunk airport of Tallahassee. It’s probably as small or smaller than the Biloxi/Gulfport airport. Like everyone else has noted, there were not enough rental cars so my FIL got in a car and drove the five hours there to pick her up and five hours to come right back. In those scary times he was happy to make that round trip to have her safe at home.
I kind of miss the relationship I had with him. Good man.

The second plane would have flown right over them

My old boss says he had purchased a ticket for the plane that hit one of the towers, but the meeting he was supposed to go to was cancelled. This was 6 months before 9/11.
Damn, could have been him
