My (former) BIL was in route to New Orleans, they landed in Louisville.

My old boss says he had purchased a ticket for the plane that hit one of the towers, but the meeting he was supposed to go to was cancelled. This was 6 months before 9/11.

My brother and his wife (no pics) were on a plane headed to Orlando for a Medical Conference. Their plane made it to ATL and they rented a car there and drove to Orlando. The conference was canceled and they eventually rented another car and drove home (11 hours-ish).

I was working for Enron at the time, in flight to Boston on Continental...got routed to Charlotte...no one on the plane had any idea what was happening. We landed in Charlotte with the pilot saying absolutely nothing. It wasn't until we were stopped on the tarmac that we found out a terrorist attack had occurred.

Probably best the pilot not say anything.

My mom was in Hawaii on business and was stranded there until flights ramped up again. Very scary stuff

There must have been about a million people who were supposed to be on one of the flights but cancelled or missed it for whatever reason

Friend of mine was stranded at the airport in Kansas City. Rental cars disappeared quickly. He bought a used Corolla and drove back to Dothan Al. Sold the car a month latter for what he paid for it.

Yep..rental cars went quick. I ended up riding back to Houston from Charlotte in a rental van with 6 passengers that were on my flight. All strangers. We got to know each other on that ride home. Still keep in touch with a few of them.

My wife was scheduled to be in the air flying to Richmond later that day. Her standard practice when travelling was to leave first thing in the morning, but for some reason she scheduled her flight for around noon. Had she followed her standard practice, no doubt we would have been worried to death while waiting for word that she had landed safely.

So true! My wife was crying when she finally got me on the phone. I started crying too. My mom was the same way. Very scary for family members who had loved ones flying that morning.

I was... Headed to Cinci.. Ended up in Dallas with no rental cars available to get home. Tried to land in Shreveport, but fricking George " I did 9/11" Bush was going there... Long story about how they didn't tell us what was going on, but too much to recount, here. Hardest part was the messages on my phone when I landed. People were hysterical. If we had left BR 15 minutes later we would have never left the ground.

My parents were not on a plane, but got stranded in France and were actually on the beach at Normandy and their driver told them what happened. Pretty ironic. Took them 10 days to get back home. My Mother kissed the ground at the NOLA Airport. Literally.

I was working on the construction of new south departure lounge at the Baton Rouge airport. Was in the secured area walking by the employee break room when some of the grounds crew were watching the 1st tower burning. Heard about the 2nd plane hitting shortly afterwards

About an hour latter we were told to clear the airport. Later found out the clear airport was about the same time air force one would have been flying by on its way to barksdale AFB.

The next day, the tarmac was full of commercial airlines that were not carriers that used BTR.

I worked as a senior recruiter for a company based in D.C. and had been in Korea for a job fair. Took off on 9/11 about 5:30 PM Korea time, supposed to fly to San Fran then connect for flight to Dulles. About half way into the flight (United), pilot comes on and tells us that all traffic coming from Asia has been diverted to Hawaii due to "system issues" on the West Coast. Once we landed in Hawaii some FBI type suits board the plane and tell us about the attacks. Was stuck in Hawaii for 6 days.

No, but I had a friend that was doing some dirt work as a contractor at Ft Polk. They locked him down on base for a couple days and they didn't yell him what was going on until that afternoon. Said it was scary as hell.

There are way worse places to get stuck. I’d call that an unexpected vacation.

Being locked down on Ft. Polk is terrifying by itself.
