Terrebonne Parish. He took out a pole and knocked out half the power in Houma. The ambulance was taking him straight to University but he wouldn't have made it. They stopped at a different hospital to stabilize him then air med trip to University.

The accident in Houma? If so, I used to run with your brother. Good dude. Came do some plumbing work for me also.
Was shocked when I found out that was him. Hopefully he recovers from the accident.

Yes, that is him. He doesn't remember ever running cross country.
He actually was able to mumble a few words last Monday

Looking at the xray, he severed at C6-C7. Much better chance of recovery at that level. Just may be a very long road. You never know how someone will respond when it comes to Neuro stuff.

One of the girls in our FB run group sent a big, long message the other day explaining everything he's been going through. Was shocked that it was him. Dude was a beast when he was devoted to running.

The human body, and will to survive and recover is amazing and can transcend science. He can come back from this.

To the OP:
I wish your brother well in his recovery and my heart goes put to his family and friends.
To the thread:
It is an interesting commentary on human nature:
Boston911 comes in and makes the post most people with an elementary understanding of anatomy can see clearly and is ratioed to hell.
tiger rag 93 comes in and posts a more detailed response in radiologist/orthopaedic surgeon speak and is universally upvoted.

that image indicates a very severe injury. i mean you know that. im surprised at the function he does have.
its hard to know everything just form that but i do imagine he has a long and hard recovery in front of him. im not sure what normal function is going to return. The body surprises me all the time at what it can do. Ive seen some pretty gnarly injuries return to near normal function. Seen others that seem half as bad do much worse.
Best ya'll can do is be as supportive as you can.

Wishing the best for your brother Op.
I have a basic anatomy question, I can see the obvious difference in the spinal cord between what I count as the 5th and 6th bone but everyone is saying 6/7. Is that little nub of a bone between what looks like the skull and the spinal cord the actual first, which I assume is C1?

No idea if there is any similarity to your brother but check out the Delvin Breaux story for a little optimism.

I broke C5 and C7 even worse. C7 had to be fused to C6.

Sorry to hear, sounds like your brother has quite a road in front of him.
A lot of people just can't be bothered to read anything over a sentence or two. Texting and social media likely have a part in this.

Correct, that little nub you see at the top is the anterior arch of C1. The elongated vertebral body at the top is C2. C1 is a ring that articulates in the front with the large elongated body (dens) of C2.

Had a friend break his neck in a car accident his senior year in high school. He was in the hospital for months. Finished high school from his hospital bed, but was able to walk, albeit with difficulty, to receive his diploma. He was never 100% afterwards, but I’d guesstimate 75-85% range. Haven’t seen him in years.

I fractured my C2 and actually walked away. Long story but they missed it in the ER, Xray but no CT. I was discharged and flew home. When they finally caught it, they left me a message. I drove myself to a local ER and checked in, when they did the CT shite got real!
I recovered fine. I know how blessed I am and when I saw that scan I almost puked.
Heart felt prayers for your brother and family. I hope he recovers.

C1 looks like a donut. You are looking at the side of a donut in front and back.
C2 is tall and thin and sticks up through the hole of the donut.

Didn't realize that was your brother. Hope he makes a full recovery.
