Not him, but he probably really meant to work. It doesn’t get to that point overnight, rather it gets there after several years of heavy drinking.
Imagine having a steady input of alcohol in your system all day, then night comes and you finally pass out. That’s a few hours of zero alcohol input, and your BAC begins to drop as you sleep. You wake up nauseous, anxious, and shaking and the only thing that will stop that is more alcohol. Take down a few beers or shots in the morning, and you start feeling “normal” again. Over time, the quantity needed to feel normal increases, and before you know it, it’s 6 beers or shots before work. In any case, you’re now ready to start the day and the hellacious cycle continues.
Thats dependency and tolerance, bro.
Absolutely spot on.

Quit 4 years and 4 months ago. Was drinking vodka like it was water. Crazy enough I was the most successful career wise at that point. Got to the point I would drink a 2/3 yeti cup full of vodka with Diet Coke in the morning before work. When I got home would drink about a 1/5 before passing out. Was never suicidal but it got the point with the stress of work that if I didn’t wake up I was fine with it.
Almost lost my family. Thank God, and I truly mean that, I had no career setbacks and have continued successfully in that regard. Provide exceptionally for my family but I was one DUI or public intox from losing my career.
Was given the ultimatum from the wife. Went to rehab the Monday after the Friday of my last knee crawling drunk. Completed rehab and attend AA regularly. I truly believe AA was/is God inspired.
I am in the point of sobriety that I have no desire to drink. But I know that desire is in the parking lot doing push-ups to fight me again so I stay very grounded. I’m an alcoholic and know that. It has been the best 4 years and 4 months of my life. But I know it can be ruined with the first sip. Because I have never and can’t have just a sip…I want the whole bottle, then run to the store for the light stuff, and then I am back where I started.
I pray for anybody going through this. Keep doing the do and it gets better.

Damn dude. I have had a stint in detox due to my penchant for prescription drugs when I was very young. The people who came into that detox facility in the worst shape were the drinkers. And even they were up and at 'em after 3 or 4 days...
I don’t think I took a legitimate day off for over a decade. Sun up to sun down because I would start to get the shakes around 6am.
My biggest fear was not buying enough liquor on Saturday to last me to Monday, 10am CST
Hiding the actual liquor becomes an issue as well at a certain point.

At my worst it was behind the air return in the closet. Amazing to look back now at the stupidity I was lying to myself about. “We will never regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it”. That is a promise that I’m glad I’m living out now.

Me either man. The body can take a fricking beating.
I got a little over 2 years sober after a really bad relapse. It has gotten a lot easier but man that want for a drink can come out of nowhere sometimes. I have days where I'll take a different route home so I don't pass the liquor store.

I went through rehab three times. Times 2-3 in Austin, I did ketomine treatments in the clinic while in detox. Besides truly giving in I firmly believe those treatments helped.
I feel less attached to the thought of alcohol. Now, every now and again I wonder what it would be like to have a cold one (Shawshank Redemption) but then realize Andy didn’t drink and enjoyed just the watching. I’m content haha.
I don’t know how people can detox and go back after your late 30s. The detox is so taxing each and every time. The first detox I didn’t have my equilibrium for two weeks.

Unless you are a raging drunk, why would you do such a thing.
Think about others around you , man!

Looking back i just laugh.
I can see my ways getting over on my wife for years but they never got over on my dad. He understood the routine of movement and disappearing:reappearing etc. Then the slow isolation because you trying to plan your days around vodka consumption.
Fun times.

It’s funny, the older i get, the more i realize that most successful people in life are non-drinkers.. just one example- most of the US presidents in my lifetime (im Gen X) have been non-drinkers.. Reagan barely drank at all, same with Bill Clinton.. Dubya famously quit drinking on his 40th birthday.. both Biden and Trump claim to have NEVER HAD A SIP OF ALCOHOL IN THEIR ENTIRE LIVES .
Even fictional characters- like you mentioend Andy Dufresne in Shawashank.. and i think of Sam Malone on Cheers.. dude owned a freaking bar and was stone cold sober.. Legend .

The people I know who drink heavily past college age are all fat and out of shape
One of the main reasons I don’t like to drink much if at all. Empty calories and it makes it that much harder in my older years to stay in shape. There are always people with high metabolisms who are lucky. That’s not me.

March 4 last year I ran out of bourbon and decided that that was it.
I was drinking 2 handles of bourbon and a couple of 12 packs of IPA a week. Was tired of spending over $500 a month on alcohol. My blood sugar was getting elevated and I gained a lot of weight. Was doing this for years. The final straw was that I got alcoholic neuropathy and now my feet are permanently numb and hypersensitive at the same time. That’s permanent.
Never got DTs, and rarely ever felt bad. I just know I was slowly killing myself.
Now all my blood work is normal, I’ve lost 80 pounds and feel much better overall. It is hard around social activities, but I can sub in a Guinness 0 every once in a while and all is good. Best thing I ever did.

The amount of money non drinkers and smokers save that goes into retirement is massive.

Yes. Did not get sick.
Drank about a case a week for 20 years.
Slowly decreased in my 40s to about 12 a week(if not going out).
Then decided to stop for heath reasons.

I gave drinking a week ago. I haven't had a beer since dinner last Friday night.

Heavy drinking definitely started while on active duty. Then as a 30 year old college student you realize how much time you wasted, and drinking wasn't as important as you thought it was as a 19 year old PFC.
