I have spent about 1 and 1/2 years in Japan. Mainland and Okinawa. Had a great time there.

There are plenty of unsafe ethnically homogeneous countries.

The 90's. Last time may have been 2000. Three times. All for business.

Always Tokyo, Shinjuku area.

Osaka and Kyoto, once.

Superb experience. They work too much, however.

One example of it being so safe: as noted, people ride bikes everywhere, by the thousands. And people just stop & park their bikes anywhere, not chained to anything, just parked & left. No one steals them. No littering, streets are clean. It's just not in their culture as several have noted here.

Spent 3 weeks there for our first honeymoon. It was an outstanding trip that we can’t wait to get back too. Everything about it was great. Food. Culture. Locals. All of it. Japan is phenomenal.

I was homeported in Yokosuka 20+ years ago for 3yrs. I loved every second of it and the country. If I had to leave the US it would be for Japan. They don't allow foreigners much latitude for making a life there from what I've heard.

But then why would you want to live there as a foreigner?

They don’t allow foreigners to stay because they don’t want the Chinese to overrun them. They were as nice as could be to us Americans. We talked to some bartenders who absolutely loathed the Chinese.

How do the Japanese generally view white Americans compared to other outside ethnic groups?

Spent 2 weeks there visiting son who has been working, as a teacher of English, for 2 years. First of all, unlike many European cities, practically 99% of the signs, in train stations, airports, highways, ALL restaurants, are in Japanese. Makes travel very difficult unless you are with a local. Everything is smaller & more compacted....a Kia-like car is the most common. Bikes riders are everywhere. Population is extremely healthy, especially in comparison to Americans. People as a whole are very friendly & polite. Very friendly. Japan is 99% Japanese culturally, i.e. there is very little co-mingling of races.

Thank you for allowing your son to teach this version of broken English. The Japanese have a big enough advantage already...

This is what struck me as well. For a city so big, if it was anywhere in the US, it would be a shite hole. Tokyo is great. I can't say much for anywhere outside of it because I've only rode to one place about 20 minutes into the suburbs.

But Tokyo is amazing.

Been a number of times for work, but it's been a while since I last went.
Typically stayed in Yokohama / Tokyo area.
Very courteous people, no crime.
