When did you visit and what brought you there (military, vacation, moved there, etc.)? What was your experience like?

Multi day layover/ vacation . I had business somewhere else and expanded the layover in Tokyo to a mini vacation. I loved it. Very clean. Very safe. The food is outstanding. I walked all over the place daytime and night until well beyond midnight. Never felt unsafe at any moment. There’s definitely it cultural divide, so Westerners are much more accwpted in certain areas. If you stick to these areas, language is not an issue. There will be some restaurants that are not accessible without knowing a local or otherwise being able to speak the language.Highly recommend and plan to return as soon as I can.

My daughter’s husband was assigned their with the USS Ronald Reagan. We visited them about four years ago for about 8 or 9 days. Had a good time. The folks are extremely orderly. I can see why they handle the coronavirus so much better than western countries. They are rule followers.

It was a good time and interesting to see once. I would not go back. I would prefer to go back to Europe a dozen times.

Lived there two years, personally hated it but I was homesick and essentially on lockdown the whole time.

I was stationed in Iwakuni for the Marines. Hiroshima was about an hour away but other than the Peace Park, it didn’t really have anything I wanted to see. Climbed Fuji during a training operation near Tokyo, and had no idea Katrina was happening because I was in the field during that time.
Tokyo was by far the most fun but we were only there one night

Military, I lived there for 3 years. I lived about 30 miles outside of Tokyo. I miss the hell out of that place. It is the best place I have ever lived and I have lived in a lot of places.

Currently living here. Military has brought me here twice. Once in 2011-2014 and then again in 2017 and I’m currently here. The family and I love it here, and honestly wouldn’t mind living out here permanently.

Yes, on vacation. The experience was fine - lots of history and the people are very nice.

That said...why do you ask?

I spent a good amount of time in China, specifically Hong Kong and, all things being equal, if I were going back to that part of the world by myself - then I'd take Hong Kong and Shanghai over Japan.

Spent 6 weeks there 5 years ago, Tokyo and Nagasaki. It was a great experience, the food was great the respect to others was awesome, There are a lot of city experiences and not too far out you can go hiking in the mountains. There are also some nice beaches.
I enjoyed going to the baseball games and having a girl with a backpack full of beer pour me a cup.
I also had my wallet fall out of my pocket on the subway and a lady saw it and ran me down to give it back.

Spent 2 weeks there visiting son who has been working, as a teacher of English, for 2 years. First of all, unlike many European cities, practically 99% of the signs, in train stations, airports, highways, ALL restaurants, are in Japanese. Makes travel very difficult unless you are with a local. Everything is smaller & more compacted....a Kia-like car is the most common. Bikes riders are everywhere. Population is extremely healthy, especially in comparison to Americans. People as a whole are very friendly & polite. Very friendly. Japan is 99% Japanese culturally, i.e. there is very little co-mingling of races. And very few are bilingual. It is a male dominated society, almost to the extreme. An American with Southern Gentlemen values will have a hard time in observing this part of their culture. I tried to help an elderly woman pull an overstuffed trash bag out of a metal garbage can in a store & I scared the shite out her. She almost freaked. Son told me no Japanese male would have even thought of doing that. Food is like nothing Asian cooked here. Little to no breads. Saki is dangerous it is so smooth. Not near as much meats. Tokyo is so crowded. Get out in the country & visit all the Buddist shrines. LONG flight there. Coming back not near as long by a couple of hrs, taking advantage of the winds to fly straight across the Pacific. Cold in winter time. Like snow blizzards cold.
