St. Tammany school board voted last night to push start date back to Sept. 8th. It’s now up to the St. Tammany federation of teachers and school employees to approve... which they will of course vote to get paid and do nothing for it. I wish I could vote myself an indefinite paid vacation.
I for one am pissed. I personally don’t see them going back until the new year. Not for any justifiable reason but because there’s no metric for deciding when it’s actually okay. Fear wins.

My son has been going to our schools summer camp since end of may. They keep them in the same group of ten kids all summer, same counselors per group, etc. They had a counselor’s relative test positive and made her Quarantine out of caution. That’s been the only incident all summer. Hard to imagine it going worse during school considering that kids won’t be going out of state and on vacations as often as they are in the summer. You would think if it were going to spread, it would be worse right now with everyone taking beach trips and visiting out to town relatives.

I wonder how long we will keep the 6 feet rule for social distancing. Most European countries are 3 feet.
The UK had a 6 foot rule, and it not really help them as they were one of the worst outbreaks in the world. Norway had a very small outbreak and had 3 foot policies the whole time.

I wonder if that’s because they don’t have as much physical space to actually distance in UK. Probably more compact living and classrooms compared to most of the US. I could be totally wrong on that, but just my logical shot in the dark.

They are metric though so that's closer to 6 ft. after conversion.

I wonder how long the mask all day in school will last. Eventually a teacher is going to allow the kids to take it off if they don't leave their desk. And the desk are 6 feet from each other anyway so why not take it off while learning?

Aren’t there several countries that never cancelled school and didn’t have massive outbreaks?

It looks like my sons high school is going to do the hybrid model where 50% of the kids go to school every other day. Virtual assignments on off days

No thanks. I am glad the teachers at our school love our kids and their jobs. Sorry if that offends you.

Ours gave us a decision, but it sort of sucks compared to others in our state/area. Several systems in Alabama have announced first 9 weeks online, and I guess they will reevaluate as we near that. But ours gave us the option of sending kids, or signing up now for online learning. They are of course free to start in school, and if they get sick or if the school has to shut down, they can transfer to online. But you can't transfer from online to in person during the semester. That's right, not 9 weeks, Semester.
So it is either send them and hope they make it to Christmas without the schools shutting down, or sign them up for online just so they'll have consistency. Our daughter wanted to go to school, since she is in middle school, but after talking with several of her friend's parents and realizing it is masks all day except for lunch, she changed her mind. 3 of her good friends that live near us are all going online, so she is too. We're going to get the girls together a day or two a week to let them work and study together, and have some time to play as well.
My son wanted no part of school. He didn't want to wear a mask all day, and I can't blame him. They're pointless in a class of 7 year olds who are going to fidget with them, take them on and off, touch everything, and he enjoyed the last 9 weeks of online classes back in the spring. So I have them both signed up for online learning, and they will get assigned a teacher/teachers dedicated to only that, and not one that is also teaching in a normal classroom. Plus we won't have to deal with the transition to online when the idiots in charge decide it is too dangerous to keep sending kids and we have to go through all that again.
Either option you choose, all students were going to be issued a Chromebook for the year, so we'll just go pick those up at some point and do it all at home. Sort of sucks, but I'm working from home until next year anyway.

I’m surprised your kids chose the online option. Most parents I talk to say their kids cannot wait to get back to normalcy/school, they miss that. But your kids sound older than mine so maybe that’s more for little kids.

Yep...I have two entering high school this year. They are alternating between being at school and at home every other day (they have split the kids up 1st half of the alphabet/ 2nd half...so only half are on site any particular day). This is a private school.
Our local public school system required parents to decide if they were going to send their kids to school or study from home. Whatever they decided had to be submitted by midnight yesterday, and the kids were locked in for the entire semester to whatever choice the parents made.

K? What does they have to do with them loving our kids and their jobs?

Private schools have the luxury of having the funds to afford appropriate protections for their teachers a

shite my 13 year old loses so much crap during the school year. Last year it was her lunchbox THAT HAD HER NAME MONOGRAMMED ON IT!!! How do you lose your lunchbox. Literally you take it out at lunch then put it back in your locker. I can't wait to spend 48935734 dollars on masks.
I can tell you the amount of stuff in lost and found at a middle school is staggering. Nice stuff too. I would be all over my kids for losing some of the stuff i see in our lost and found

Our school hosts a handful of big fundraisers/year, but it’s expected and they make it something everyone looks forward to, ie festivals, race for education, derby night silent auction, and that is what helps our school have funds to go above and beyond. Also, I believe they may add additional fees this year to pay for the extra things they’ve had to implement to open. I’m ok with that and haven’t heard or other parents being upset with it. We just want the kids to be able to return to school because everyone knows virtual learning is garbage, particularly for lower elementary.
