I work in one and my 98 yo grandmother is in one near my parents home. Neither are allowing visitors and yes, it is hard on them. Will any of the staff take a few moments to help her facetime with you? I'm so sorry.

My aunts and uncles put My Grandaddy in the nursing home when he was in his 90s,because he had gotten so ornery and mean that nobody could help him.
He started tripping the fire alarm and escaping during the confusion, so he could go check on his cows.
They kicked him out of the home, and he went back to his house, and made it on his own for several more years. Died sitting in his chair. His house was a mess though.

I'm more in the age of being in the nursing home, but not there yet.

I can understand why the nurses/caregivers wouldn't want their patients sharing a phone, the sanitizing would be difficult, and probably wouldn't work.

How about going on Amazon and getting a walkie talkie? They are cheap. Label one with your grandmother's name and the channel she will use that you will also use. (Spares for when her battery runs low). That way you're not impinging on the home's wifi, and it will be hers and hers alone.

I doubt it. Since we put the camera in it’s been a catch 22 because we see neglect going on so we call a good bit. I would say 50% of the staff is terrible and 25% just don’t care. The director is incompetent and narcissistic

FYI you can call the state department of health and report them for valid, serious concerns.

I am only in the facility a couple of days per week and typically see the day/evening shift BUT I can say that our people are quite good. We have CNAs that love their people and some of those people won't eat if "xxx" isn't hte one to help them. We've got staff that cares. Not saying everything is perfect -- and we do have families that call to report things.

Those things are investigated by DHH and as far as I know we've been cleared every time. Staff has been fired for what would seem like small things so I'd say that our administration is pretty good.

Do you not understand that the elderly may not get why their family suddenly stops showing up or is only waving to them through a window?

They announced to everyone eating Saturday that all activities were being cancelled
My Grandpa is in his right mind & had the sense to ask what they said since he can’t hear & staff is now too busy to put his hearing aids in.

Those with dementia or who are hard of hearing probably don’t understand & are confused

The majority of my clients own and run long term care facilities.

I've been hundreds of facilities and can confidently say this:

There isn't a lot of middle ground: the facilities are either fantastic or poor/very poor.

This is directly correlated with their ownership (either independent of corporate-owned). The strong (and profitable) owners put incredible administrators and DONs/ADONs in their facilities, give them the tools that they lead and then get out of the way.

Like any other business, the strong leaders hire and train strong and caring staff and, of course, this trickles all the way down the ladder.

You can tell the moment you walk in the front door: it's palbable.

I feel for you guys that have family members in less than desirable facilities. Please remember that all not facilities are equal and there are typically better options in your community.

God bless.

Yes. My dad is not in a nursing home but a Rehab Hospital which is on lockdown with no visitors until further notice.

I’ve been crying the past 3 days missing my dad. And now again. My dad was in ICU just 3 weeks ago and was sent to a Rehab Therapy (Sage) to get more strength since he could no longer use his legs or arms from a flu 3 months ago as well as COPD and Stage 4 kidney disease. I visited my dad a lot at both the hospital and Rehab (Sage) and i even surprised him with dinner and we ate in his room together. He still needed help just opening a sauce packet with his shaky hands.

2 days later I got a call from Sage saying they will no longer be having visitors due to Cov19. My dad has improved so much. From not being able to put on a shirt to now being able to stand briefly to change his pants. His voice and stamina are improving too. In the past 4 months I’ve almost lost him twice so my family has made drastic changes to care for him at home and do his errands. I hate not being with my dad so much. My heart hurts bc I can’t see him when I was so close to losing him forever.
He’s at the age where anything can happen bc of his health and condition. I’m not trying to think negatively but Who knows how long he will be on lockdown and how long after lockdown will I get to catch up and spend the precious time with we’ve lost together? It’s not unrealistic to think this way after what I’ve seen him go through. I have no way of seeing him at all.
AlI...... all I want is to do us give him a hug. I’d wear a hazmat suit just to do this. Anything. Today I’m going there to drop off his mail with some tasty snacks. Also I think I’ll write him a letter or card and include some family pictures. That’s the least I can do.
I needed to vent. You are not alone.

I'm sorry for everybody that has family in the nursing home. I was going to go visit my uncle this weekend, but that is obviously on hold. I to hope I get to sit with him before he passes.

It's tough but keep in perspective that the residents of a nursing home are on the front line of this battle. If one gets it then a lot of the other people will get it and many will die. These are some of the exact people we are trying to protect.

It’s so nice to see all the love and compassion you all have for your elderly relatives! I wish all the negative and ungrateful people complaining about how this virus is inconveniencing their life would read this post to know how blessed they really are.
My heart goes out to all of you and your loved ones in nursing homes.

This is no disrespect to you but every person who has ever worked in a nursing says almost exactly what you just posted. I know this because after a severe injury I had to stay in 3 different nursing homes/rehab centers. They all claim how much they care and so on but its just them repeating what management has told them to spit out. From my perspective, roughly 25% nurses are caring but the rest dont give a damn. As far as the CNA's, it is rare you ever find one who is actually pleasant and doing her responsibilities with a good attitude. If you asked the administrator or DON they would quote their excellent record from annual reviews and so on, but its bullshite.

Not sure what your job title is but I suspect the employees are on their best behavior when you are around. When management leaves the building the residents suffer big time in even the best nursing homes. Now with this virus I am sure it is hell getting low paid CNA's to show up for work. My heart breaks for what life must be like for the residents right now. Horrible meals(probably bologna sandwiches). Waiting long periods of times to have diapers changed. Very few showers given. Even under normal conditions nursing home staff are lazy, inattentive and flat out mean, but right now has to be a nightmare.

You have to “look at your mom through a window”?!

That’s fricking ridiculous... wow. My grandfather is at a home, they just make us put on face masks to visit past the lobby.

That sucks, my dude.
