It's cliche, but use it lose it. Engage him in good discussions about subjects of depth. Crossword puzzles, card games, jigsaw puzzles, brain teasers... Discuss the past, near and distant...

I totally agree with the above. I'm nearing 74 and have been doing crossword puzzles, word play games, deciphering coded puzzles etc. for years. I also love to play Scrabble and games that make me think like Trivial Pursuit.

I also have a pretty complete woodworking shop that allows me to damn near build anything my mind can come up with-----even though it usually sits idle during the heat of our summers since there's no A/C in it and it gets HOT just being inside it.

You've got to keep the mind and body working.

Would start with getting a hormone panel done.

If all looks good, would probably see neurologist

From a supplement standpoint:
Creatine, NAD, Nootropics

Then layer in some brain exercises.

Ate some Bluey’s last night, 44 years old and still tripping on shrooms for 30 years. Once a year will keep you grounded.

I read that taking small doses of shrooms has shown signs of improving dementia

Not that he has dementia in his 60s but just saying

Cut out alcohol, if you smoke, stop. Get regular exercise and at least seven hours of sleep a night. Keep your blood sugar under control. Those are all statistically correlated with maintaining cognitive function. But you can do everything right and still get dementia.

Get him off of Statins if he’s on one. The dementia studies show that those taking stating have a greater risk of dementia.

such a strange and somewhat fascinating disease
had a somewhat similar experience with my dad

a week before he went into the hospital for what turned out to be the last time, I was visiting him and noticed a yellow legal pad on his desk, covered in what looked like a hand drawn map

i asked him about it, and he said “thats the layout of the neighborhood where i grew up” and proceeded to tell me not only who lived in which house, but what they did for a living and which church they attended

but he couldn’t recall his grandchildren’s names

Here are the obvious but essential things to do: cut out all alcohol. This can’t be done too soon. Next stay socially engaged. Studies show you live longer and stay sharper if you keep involved with people and things. Find a job or a hobby that challenges mentally. Eat healthy and exercise. It’s just that simple because the rest is genetics and luck. .

From an MD friend:
Get an APOE genotype test and a PTAU-217. PCP can order this. Positive tests mean increased risk of Alzheimer’s.
Start following the MIND diet and start taking B vitamins to hopefully lower Homocysteine levels. Get a Neuropsychology evaluation for a baseline cognitive status, and if decline is noted, start either Aricept or Memantine to slow the progress.
He said that Statins DO NOT INCREASE RISK OF ALZHEIMERS! They actually lower risk of vascular dementia.
He is pretty sharp, reads alot and is usually right about stuff. TIFWIW.
