I had one by the front door. Turns out that there was wiring running to the yard for a lamp post of some sort that was no longer there.

Look for a random junction box somewhere around the outside of your house. Converted mine to a GFCI for a switch controlled Christmas light win.

I do. It's also in the kitchen.

Previous owner installed lights on a retaining wall and in the trees. Two of them are aimed at the front of the house for some reason.

No idea how to turn them off. They seem to be based on a timer or photocell. They are always on when it gets dark, then turn off around midnight.

Is the switch by itself? Is it part of a bank of two or three? Sometimes houses have spare switches if you want to install a fan, etc where you currently only have a light.

We have a useless switch. Previous owners installed it with plans to hook a ceiling fan to it and never got around to it. We speculated for months and then finally emailed the previous owners daughter (who sold us the house) and she gave us the scoop.

More puzzling however to me is that the previous owner had two switches installed for just about every light in the house (some actually have 3 switches with dimmers). It was a nightmare for the inspector to sort the configuration out.

Yeah, my wife didn’t know where she wanted the dining room fixture in regards to the dining room table, so there’s a switch for a fixture that doesn’t exist. We’ve been in the house for a year and she still hasn’t made up her mind, so I’d imagine it’ll potentially drive a future owner mad trying to figure that one out.

Some of them turn on and off outlets. That's probably it.

Our bedroom has a switch that does nothing. When we built the house, the put 3 switches in there Incase we ever changed out the fan. Our current fan has no light kit, but the extra switch would control the light on the fan, if it were there. Right now, it only controls the fan itself and the other working switch controls the can lights

The blank light switch does do something: provide you with something to do and talk about.

Bought a house recently and there is a lightswitch that seems useless. Have spent more time than I want to admit trying to figure it out. Attic is over insulated so tracing the wire is going to be a bitch and I have bigger problems at this point.

Some possibilities:

Switch could be to a half-hot receptacle. So when the switch is thrown, it turns on/off 1/2 of a receptacle (or set of receptacles).

Switch could be separate for a room pre-wired for a ceiling fan. If the room doesn't have a fan, it may be wired for one. If it does have a fan, it may have been put in after construction and wired wrong (not using the separate switch).

Maybe they control your outside Christmas lights?

They have tracers that you put on the line itself to identify which circuit it goes to. They work pretty well too.

I just hopped up in my attic to trace my mystery switch and voila - it wasn’t connected to anything BUT the switch

We have two switches in our living room that I finally found out what they controlled when we replaced our carpet several years ago with tile. Come to find out that there were two recepticals in the floor that the previous owners filled in and covered up with carpet.

If it's in the kitchen, check to see if you have some undercabinet lights that just have burnt bulbs in them. That one took me a while to figure out too.

In the kitchen? Will your dishwasher power on if the light switch is in the off position?

Across the room from the dishwasher, will check it just in case. Have disposal outlet by the sink. Have lights above the counters and above where an island would go. Hall light is on another bank of switches. Living room lights are on the other side of the wall in a bank of switches.

Have some installed that have one of those touch buttons. They work, but maybe the switch was always on when I tried.
