Anyone have a 4K projector?

Posted on tech board but that place isn’t really the beehive of activity. Anyone have any experience with these? Converting my carport into a man cave and have been exploring TV ideas. Was considering a lower end 75-85inch tv (maybe a 4 series tcl) to mount on wall but my brother suggested to go with a projector. Hows the picture on these ? I’m not as picky as most. I’d sacrifice a little picture quality for a huge arse screen for football games and maybe a little light gaming . What am I looking to spend on a decent set up ? My other question is how does it work as far as getting my shows and stuff on there ? Hdmi ports ? Excuse my ignorance I have zero experience with these. Thanks in advance.

Friend of mine had one. Not sure if it was 4K, but it was awesome. Used a type of paint on his wall instead of a screen to project it onto.

You get what you pay for with them in my experience

Have one at work, if you do it you need to drop coin and get the ladder projector. If you do not have that type of cheddar, go with and 85” tv.

Really not crazy picky about the actual 4K aspect of it if that’s gonna blast the price up. As long as it’s decent . Workin with about a 500 square foot space. Mainly just want a cool setup for football and movie nights. Maybe a little madden or cod on the ps5. I was thinking I could get a decent setup in the 1500-2500 range. I’m not a big tech snob but just need a decent picture.
Will also refrain from ceiling Mount bc I may want to move it out to the pool some nights and project on one of those inflatable screens.

I had a 90” screen with a top of the line HD projector in my old house’s media room. I had a great sound system hooked up to it as well. It was kind of a hassle changing bulbs, keeping all the devices synced and making adjustments. These days, I’d just get a TV, as you can get the job done done much less money.

You can paint a rectangle on your wall and use that as a screen if you need to.
The biggest thing about projectors is that they don't get very bright. So if your room has a lot of light, a projector might not be the best fit.
The other thing is audio. You don't want to use the speakers on a projector. You'll need at least a soundbar. Maybe one with HDMI pass through. So you can plug your PS5 directly to it, then pass the video from the soundbar to the projector.

I have an Epson 5040UBe. It's a 'faux-K' meaning that it uses some technology which adds pixels to increase sharpness. It is also wireless so I did not have to run a HDMI cable through my ceiling. The current version is the 5050UBe and it appears that they are now fully 4K with UHD. My projector, being faux-K, is still extremely impressive so I can imagine this one is even more so.
I bought a 106" Screen Innovations 3 Series fixed-frame screen with solar gray fabric. To mount the screen I built a standing frame using a Kreg jig and 2x4s. This is in my bonus room where the walls are angled so I anchored the top of the frame to the wall using eye-bolts. Making a custom frame allowed me to optimize screen height and maximize the space in the room.
I've had it since 2017 and changed the bulb for the first time about a year ago.

Have had a 1080P projector for about 7-8 years now. Will be upgrading soon, since prices are starting to come down.
First off you are on the wrong forum (sorry Chicken), one that I like

For a "man cave" setup, you do not need to spend over $4000 for a projector. Light controlled is key though if you are wanting a cheaper setup. Make sure you can keep the carport dark.
If light leak is an issue, look at a ultra-short throw (UST) laser projector. This is where it works much better with a special screen that get a bit pricey. This combo however is about the same as a TV on the wall. Can be seen in bright light conditions
Seriously do not waste money on a retractable screen unless there is some physical need for it.
4K projector and painted wall - $1500+
4K projector to screen - $2000
4K UST and screen - <$5000 if you want
Go laser if you can or expect to replace bulbs 10,000 - 20,000 hours of use and run in the $100s
If you are OT baller, ignore the above and go here

Adding youtube channel that is pretty good -
Chris Majestic Youtube
Did not address watching stuff.
More are coming smart now, so will have apps installed or you can install them for streaming.
If not hook up any device to make it smart (XBox, PS, Roku, Firestick, etc.)
If you can find one in the budget, HDMI 2.1 would be much better. Do not know if any have 2.1 yet, as TVs are just now getting it and really only good for 4K gaming.
Also careful with 4K, several of the low end accept 4K signal, but do not display 4K. Also there are different types of 4K kind of. That youtube channel breaks it down alot.

I appreciate the info. It’s a carport being converted to a man cave. Construction just started and we’re closing it in and adding flooring and the whole 9 yards to make it like a regular room. It will have double doors on each side but no windows. Was thinking I may want to get some blackout shades for the door windows though.

I use to have a 720p set up in my theater in my old house. My screen was 130". It looked great, I couldn't imagine needing to go to 4k.

I have the Epson 5040ub and I love it for movies and gaming. Invest in the screen and a light dimmer and the picture looks great.
I never use it for football, even though I thought I would. I don’t like sitting in the dark for football especially if I’m entertaining or if it’s a day game. I prefer the 65” Sony on the patio for football.

Upvote for Laser. It's the best footprint the contrast ratio (often over looked) is outstanding in most. 1.5 Million to 1 in most.
Alot of these now have sound bar tech built in.

Right 4K ready is NOT 4K native. It's a marketing tool.

I have an epson HD projector from Office Depot. Want to say it was about 600 bucks. I also bought a 100” pull down screen off Amazon. It’s mounted on the ceiling of my outdoor patio and the screen is on the wall above the fireplace. It’s rolled up when not In use. The picture is pretty nice if I have to say. Clear as hell. Been having it out there for about 4 years. Use to take the projector In but got to me a pia. So it just stays there. I’ll just buy a new one when it dies lol.

Yeah I think for what I’m really wanting I’d be happy with one in the 600-1000 dollar range with just a cheap 100-120” screen from Amazon or something. I am not too hung up on it being the best picture in the world so I prob shouldn’t have put “4K” in the thread title. I think a 1080 p short throw would serve me just fine. I see a very highly rated epson one here in town @best buy for like 800 bucks with built in apps and stuff. I may just go that route.
