Notice recently when I’m searching for hotels in various cities, hostel options are starting to come up for really cheap. Don’t remember seeing this in the past.

Are these just getting lucky orgies or am I more prone to getting stabbed?

We stayed in one right by Wrigley Field once for a night. It was nothing special but great location. Mostly full of foreigners though

Didn't see any getting lucky orgies though but all we really did was stumble back drunk and pass out and we also didn't get stabbed

If you like smelling your bunk mates then a hostel might be right for you.

Either way, doesn’t sound good. Unless the OP is in to that

I've never stayed there cause it's right by my house, but I'd stay at the Blue Moon "Guest House" in Lafayette in a heartbeat. They call it a guest house but it's basically a hostel with an awesome bar attached to it.

I owned one for about 6 years. Recently sold.

The market has gotten huge in the US over the past ten years. Check out places like The Freehand in Miami for what they call a "poshtel". The beds go for about $55 a night and you still share a room with 7 other people.
A huge one just opened on Canal in downtown New Orleans. It is a HI, which is kind of like the Hilton chain of hostels. It is a very popular thing with the rest of the world, just took Americans longer to get used to. (The movie Hostel didn't help, lol). It is a great way for 18-30 year old to travel affordably.

You'll need to hide your valuables in your anus.

Yep, stayed at one in Denver. It was uneventful. No orgies, no stabbings.

Stayed in a couple on a cross country roadtrip when I was 18, but they were in non-urban areas near national/state parks and the like. They were more akin to nice bunkhouses I guess. Similar to those targeting thru-hikers on PCT/AT (a couple may have actually been on/near the PCT but I can't remember).

We stayed in one in NY and Boston while on road trip. We had 8 people with us so we were able to book the entire room with 4 bunks in it. Wasn't to bad, no issues. But we didn't sleep next to strangers either....
