I stayed at a few Hostelling International properties in CA back in February and they were more than adequate. Just like any lodging choice, check the ratings and reviews and you'll be all set.

Point Montara Hostel - Try finding a place with this setting at <$40 a night.

Monterey - Central location in Monterey + decent free breakfast

Yosemite Bug Rustic Resort - LOVED this place. The bunks were nothing special but the on site diner/restaurant was incredible. Solid breakfast in the AM. Live music at night that attracted a lot of locals. Outside of camping it seemed to be the only legit affordable option near Yosemite.

Stayed in many across Europe but the availability in the US is minimal. I loved the experience; met tons of people across the world. I only stayed at the highest rated hostels and generally 4-6 person bunks. I didn’t do any 16+ person rooms. Depending on the country, I paid $10-30/night.

I just looked some up. There is one in SF for like $35.. That has to be a mistake. Paying $35 a night to stay at a Hostel in SF might be cheaper than renting..

In most cases, they have restrictions on where you are from to stay and how long you can stay.
For example, we did not allow any stays longer than 14 days, and all dorm guest had to have an out of state ID and be under the age of 35.
