Bright side, your confidence should be high. You were considered, they liked you and someone with more experience got it. That means there is one less swinging dick between you and the next opportunity.

Keep plugging away. There's a ton of jobs out there.

He probably felt bad because he had to hire a more diverse candidate, even though you were more qualified. Happens all the time.

I would consider it the next best thing to being hired. Sounds like a good company

Yep, had that happen a few months back. A sales manager for a uniform service company reached out to me on LinkedIn wanting to set up an interview. Spoke with her, had 2 other interviews afterwards with a recruiter and another manager, thought I nailed the interviews only to get a call from the recruiter saying they "decided to go in a different direction". Sucks but I did appreciate the fact that they reached out instead of just ghosting.

Keep your chin up and keep moving forward, you'll get where you want to be

The turn down phone call is SOP for anyone who makes the final round of interviews where I work.

ETA UPDATE
I did not get the job. The call was because he felt they owed me an explanation and wanted to express that I made this a very difficult decision for them and they saw a lot of potential in me. Ultimately, they decided it was best to go with a candidate with more experience but will keep me in mind for future openings.

It could be BS niceties but nonetheless I did appreciate the phone call to tell me rather than an email.

While sad you didn't get the job, this was handled with class.

That's incredibly fricked up. Who would ever think that's a good idea

I’ve reflected back on it for years and the only thing I can figure is that the manager needed a reason to expense his lunch. That’s all it could possibly be.

sounds like you missed out on a prime opportunity to order the most expensive items on the menu

Yeah, but the way I remember it is that I ordered first then he told me. That was 20 years ago though. It was for selling commercials during LSU athletic events. Whichever station 98.1 was back then. One of the interviews included Gordy Rush. Seriously, it sounds like I’m making this up but it’s 100% true.

I had this happen to me with a Fortune 500 company as well. Nailed the interviews and thought I had the job. Got a call saying they loved me but had someone from another location that was transferring so they hired her internally.

I respected that as moving up in the company is one of the reasons I applied there to begin with. Appreciated the call as well.

ETA: good luck on the job search OP. If you’re getting this far in interviews you’ll probably find a job shortly.

I guess I appreciate that more because I interviewed for a high ranking position at HCA. Only me and a lady were interviewed. I spent 8 hours with various vice presidents and big wigs. The last guy I spent 3 hours with acted like I essentially landed the job and told me I should go out to some subdivision north of Nashville and scout it out for a place to live. Told me he thought after I got there I would probably get a promotion in a year. "you'd be surprised at how many people here at corporate are idiots." I went home and was ecstatic....I was going to get my dream job and the one I had wanted for 10 years.

Never heard from corporate again.

Sorry to hear that. I believe it all happens for a reason. Go read my post on the first page, it sounds like the same exact scenario.

I had already figured out the route I would take to get to work, how many minutes of a podcast I would get to listen to each way, where I could possibly stop for a biscuit in the morning. Already had the job in my head.

As reality set in I kind of knew deep down it wasn't the right fit. I wanted to get away from this horse shite place I work at now, but it wasn't the right fit. Since the other place I had applied to was sort of second fiddle because I didnt think it would amount to much I was relaxed as hell, care free. It worked. I cant wait to go to work for these people in the next couple weeks. Keep your head up!

A wise manager once told me if you find someone who makes your company better, creating a spot for them is easy.

Polite BS. Sorry you didn't get the job.

This exact same thing happened several years ago. Made it through three rounds of interviews with a Fortune 500 company. Really hit it off with the guy who would have been my boss. They ended up offering the job to someone else that had more experience. He called to tell me.

I have continued to stay in touch with the guy and he actually referred me to a few other companies offering similar roles. Before I could pursue one of those I found a different job that I’m incredibly happy at.

Based on my experience, my advice is to stay on good terms! You obviously made a good impression and you never know what will come of that connection.

I had the same thing happen last year—they hired the other guy b/c he had a little more experience. Last month they called me and asked if I was still interested b/c the other guy was moving on. Tell them thanks, be gracious, and who knows how things might work out in the future!
