Buddy of mine worked for the Federal Government and took a three year posting in Guam. When you move overseas you get one shipping container full of goods. Anything you can fit in it. Move there was fine. Move back they had all their household goods plus a truck that he bought over there and wanted to bring back in the storage container. The ship hit rough seas in transit and lost his container and several others over the side.
Holy crap
Was there any recourse? Did they get refunded the amount of the items lost? Though i’m guessing a lot of it was sentimental stuff, pictures and things that maybe cant be replaced.
Also, about how big is the original container used to get ur stuff there? Like the size of a truck bed, or the size of a two car garage?

No. Why would I dream about movers?

Update
Didn't bring enough blankets, zero clothes hanging boxes, mirror boxes, ran out of tape.....but the worst of all, they set something on our antique dining table and scratched the crap out of it.................even after I had a talk with them before they started on being very careful how they handle the antique furniture in our house.
Now they have to spend a whole lot more time in the morning pre-packing before they can load up and leave. We have a 3 - 3.5 hour drive to the new place and will be getting there much later than we planned for.
Of course the "boss" said "we'll take care of repairing the table". Nope, nadda, no way.

I fricking hate moving myself but I'd never let someone else touch my shite.
When I was growing up my aunt once dated this douchebag guy whose family business was continuously operating scam furniture moving rackets (popping up here and there under different names). Every few years we see this guy or his family pop up in the news because they put together some new scam company.
They basically pick up your shite and disappear with all of it, and hold all of your shite hostage in their trucks unless you pay them way more money than was previously agreed to. If you don't pay up, the police can't do shite about it, you have to go through the entire legal system and they knew how to draw it out to make it so people would just pay up instead of tying up their time and money. They'd get busted and get a slap on the wrist and turn around and do it all over again in a few years.

Not that bad but we had booked them weeks in advance at agreed price, they came in on moving day and basically doubled the price. Ended up finding other movers who were ok at the recommendation at the apologetic sales rep that promised us a price.

I'm screwed....AMS are actually in my house at this very moment packing/boxing/wrapping my "stuff". Came highly recommended from a friend who recently used them for a move. Oh well, wife and I are both here keeping an eye on things....wish me luck
Crap me too - I hired them to unload my PODS at the new house on Sunday. Luckily just unloading so harder to screw that up but this isn’t good to hear. Oh well I’ll report back that night.

I’ve been directly involved with Two Men and a Truck 3 times. They are fantastic and the best at what they do.
Not in Baton Rouge. Crushed boxes, broken furniture (that they positioned to hide the damage), and I have a missing item.

Then you got bamboozled by someone else helping you move. Those guys are great.

I can't say that I've had a "nightmare" scenario with movers, but I've had less than pleasant experiences before. One company I would recommend that I've used twice now is A-1 Auto Transport. No problems with them at all and I had a car moved with my stuff too. Plus they offer a student discount which wasn't a huge price break, but it was $50 extra bucks I wouldn't have had otherwise. Good guys too.

What's it like owning A-1 Auto Transport?

Not that it would necessarily work, but I would figure that family members would start “disappearing” until truckloads start showing up at some point.

Yes. Just buy new shite when you get there.

I see these frickers every morning before I hop on Bush. Are they really that bad? I was considering using them at some point.
Yes, yes in fact they are. They weren't the cheapest or most expensive quote we got. Allied was like $3000 more than them though. The AMS dude came out to the house and did the walk through noting everything in the house that would be moved, including the attic. Moving day is approaching and my work decides to send me out of the country. My dad made arrangements to be there for me on moving day. Guys show up and start boxing stuff up and loading the truck. Later in the afternoon I start getting texts from my dad that there doesn't appear to be enough room on the truck for everything. Guy assures my dad everything would fit. 2 hours later I get "are you just leaving the stuff in your attic". The AMS dudes just completely forgot it all and took off to the place where it was all going to be unloaded and stored. I had to call to get another truck sent back out to load up the attic. All of our stuff was to be stored for about 2 weeks and then moved into the new house. Come move in day and it was just like someone said earlier; furniture scratched/broken, pictures broken, we have a few tables with tiles on them and half the tiles were broken, the cover for the grill looked like swiss cheese, and on and on. Then was the whole process of filing the claim for damages and getting money. Definitely not something I want to ever have to do again.
