Never thought it was a problem to isolate different groups on different days.
It’s not. Don’t listen to these people that tell you differently, they don’t know what they’re talking about and aren’t athletes

It destroyed my thigh muscle. I can walk but can’t do much else now

Fraternity brother of mine did too much coke over two weeks and it affected his kidneys and muscles. Dark urine and total body soreness.
Finally went to doc and he was honest with them and they kept overnight with bags of saline.
That was expensive.

What would be a better way to “train like an athlete”?
You're fine outside of maybe trying too much when you're first getting back into the gym, a lot of folks have the imagery of being in their own Rocky montage their first week back in the gym and in doing so overexert themselves leading to illness. Consistency is key for weight lifting.

BTW I agree with you and though I disagree with a lot of their methods the core idea of functional strength in Cross Fit is very on point for the vast majority of people.

Far far more so than bodybuilding

Over 40 and pushing through soreness equals Rhabdo.
Listen to your body. Hydrate. Blasting muscles that are already sore is a recipe for disaster. Also, sounds like you are already pushing it. Doing push-ups. If it still hurts don’t do it. Not after a diagnosis of rhabdo. Shut it down u til your labs and pee are normal and you feel normal.

no its just the version of being a dumbass and exercising for the dopamine release
usually happens when someone has hit rock bottom, starts fasting or on very low calorie and then starts lifting and decides something like drop sets is the way or some other intensity technique should be used. usually from someone that has not lifted in a long arse time.

I can't tell if you're serious.
Rhabdo can kill you without intervention.

Got it when I was 20 and an OL for a D3 school. Spent my Christmas break partying and eating like garbage. Came back to our offseason workouts out of shape. We did 4 hard lifts/week plus 3 conditioning days. By week 3 I was pissing coke and couldn't straighten my arms out. Was put in the ICU when they tested my blood and my creatinine levels were off the charts.

I remember the early days of Crossfit where people were getting Rhabdo often enough that they made a cartoon clown to make fun of it.
I've read about people getting Rhabdo from too much abdominal exercise - like GH sit ups - and the symptoms lasted for months. Like they'd bend over to pick something up, and their stomach muscles would give out causing them to fall over.

Anyone ever smelled ammonia after a hard run or workout? That's your body consuming itself as well. Bad shite.

I had this happen a lot when I drank a lot at night but kept lifting during the day.

Ex girlfriend used to work out but joined Orange Theory on a free membership to try it out. I think after 2 or 3 classes she started experiencing the symptoms. Ended up in the hospital for about 48 hours, arms really swollen, on constant IV. It can be really damaging to your kidneys, and in some cases they have to slice open appendages to relieve the pressure. It's no joke.

Not sure if you are serious. Permanent kidney damage was a real concern. If I didn’t improve the day that I saw the doctor I was headed to the ER.
I’m not going to quit. Will just be smarter about ramping up to more strenuous exercise.
